The Game Awards 2024 brought forth a plethora of trailers, including one for Mafia: The Old Country. After 3 months of silence following the game’s initial teaser trailer, studio Hangar 13 is out with a trailer that expands on the story of this much-anticipated prequel to the Mafia saga. The trailer confirms the game’s new location, introduces us to the cast of characters, and gives us sneak peeks at the game’s story beats. In this trailer breakdown, we shall go over the Mafia: The Old Country trailer as seen at The Game Awards 2024 (TGA 2024).
Mafia: The Old Country Trailer Breakdown
A New Setting
The latest trailer of Mafia: The Old Country gave us a proper look at the brutal underworld of Sicily. The story is set in 1900s Sicily, a stark departure from the previous settings that explored the life of Italian immigrants in the United States of America. The shift to Sicily also brings in greener pastures, taking us away from the emerging concrete jungles of the US.
The setting features vast grass fields, crowded harbors and docks, busy theatres, villages, farms, caves, mines, and more. This is by far the most different setting ever seen in a Mafia game. The new setting also opens up possibilities for new modes of transport, such as the horses seen in the TGA trailer. Horses will make their debut in The Old Country. Other vehicles, previously seen in Mafia: Definitive Edition will also be making their return, accurate to the setting.
Combat

The trailer also gave us an extensive look at the combat systems and scenarios in Mafia: The Old Country. There are shots of shootouts through ruins and caves, as well as a small peek at the melee combat in the game. The shootouts are as you would expect from a Mafia game, with a great focus on taking cover and peeking out to shoot.
The melee combat is what caught our eye. The game seems to be pushing more towards the melee combat, as it was seen in Mafia 2. The brief look at the combat shows Enzo, the protagonist, slashing away with a knife while evading strikes in what seems like a boss battle. The knife seems to be his go-to weapon and is featured extensively in the trailer. The trailer also shows Enzo sneaking up and choking out a gentleman in a theatre. While not concrete, we can expect stealth to make a comeback.
