The world of Sea of Thieves is filled with treasures to find and seas to raid. The life of a pirate is one of thrill, but one thing a pirate seeks more than treasure is reputation, and your reputation in Sea of Thieves is determined by the Trading Companies.

Trading Companies, as their name suggests, are more or less like merchant traders in the game who help you buy or sell goods. These companies also give you special voyages, completing which increases your reputation. All the treasures you find across your journey can also be traded with these Trading Companies in exchange for your reputation. Max out your reputation with any three of these Trading Companies, and you will ascend to the status of Pirate Legend.

Trading Companies are a valuable tool to gain access to new missions, get the most value, and are crucial to maximizing your Sea of Thieves experience. If you’re looking to make the most out of your game, you need to know all about these companies. In this guide, we shall go over all Trading Companies in Sea of Thieves and explain them in detail.

All Trading Companies

There are eight Trading Companies in Sea of Thieves, all of which specialize in different trades.

Gold Hoarders

The Gold Hoarders, much as their name suggests, are all about hoarding gold. This is a treasure-hunting company, and their voyages reflect their greedy nature. Most of the missions received under the Gold Hoarders are puzzle-based and see you seeking out treasure. Completing these missions and earning a high rank grants you a Gold Hoarder Set, among other rare cosmetics.

Order of Souls

The Order of Souls is one of the creepier companies that seemingly engage in the dark arts. This company sends you on bounty missions to hunt the ghosts of dead captains, as well as other Skeleton Captains on Ghost Ships. The Order of Souls then uses the skulls of these dead captains to retrieve their memories and locate ancient treasures. Their missions feature the most supernatural elements in the game, as well as modest mission variety.

Merchant Alliance

The Merchant Alliance is the capitalist overlord of Sea of Thieves. This Trading Company specializes in the transfer of goods and loot in the form of consignments. The missions under this Trading Company are pretty much errand missions. You’re assigned a package to pick up, which you then have to deliver to a designated location. Maxing out your rank with this Trading Company gives you the Grand Admiral Set.

Reaper’s Bones

The Reaper’s Bones are a group of pirates masquerading as a Trading Company. Followers of Captain Flameheart, this Trading Company will accept any item in the game for a fair price. There are no designated missions for this group, and you earn Reputation by participating in world events and killing Emissary captains all over the seas. This group indulges in chaos, and they are not ashamed of it. Maxing out this group’s ranks gives you the Reaper’s Bones Set.

The Hunter’s Call

The Hunter’s Call is a Trading Company that specializes in all things hunting. Set up by Merrick, the Megalodon hunter, this company deals out missions that send you animal hunting. The animals you hunt as part of these missions are rare and powerful, posing a significant challenge. The Hunter’s Call also purchases fish and other meat from you, making them a good way to earn money. Maxing out your reputation with this company will give you the Killer Whale Set.

Athena’s Fortune

A mere myth for most of the game, Athena’s Fortune is a legendary Trading Company set up by the Pirate Lord himself. The only way to access this company is to become a Pirate Legend. You become a Pirate Legend by reaching Rank 50 with three Trading Companies. Once you’ve passed that threshold, you can take on Athena’s Fortune missions, which send you on a quest seeking legendary treasures. The Athena’s Fortune hideout also lets you purchase legendary cosmetics found nowhere else in the game.

Bilge’s Rats

The Bilge Rats were formed to counter the increasing presence of Trading Companies in the world. Their goal was to essentially stop the privatization of pirate life and to fight the restrictions of the other companies. The missions handed by Bilge Rats are long and exciting quests that see you navigating the seas to confirm rumors and uncover secrets. The faction also supports a black market where you can trade Bilge Rat Doubloons for cosmetics and other items.

Sea Dogs

The Sea Dogs behave less like a Trading Company and more like fight organizers. The faction led the Arena (which shut down in 2022) and would organize matches that players could participate in. Playing through these matches granted various rewards, including the rare Triumphant Sea Dog Set cosmetics. At the time of this writing, there is unfortunately no way to progress ahead with this Trading Company.
