Stop motion animation is a filmmaking technique in which objects, typically models or puppets, are photographed frame by frame while being slightly moved between each shot. When these images are played in sequence, they create the illusion of movement. Significantly, this movement isn’t a smooth replica of real life and gives the visual medium a distinct style.

The Gameplay Trailers for South of Midnight were released a year later on June 9, 2024. True to the title, this time players got to see some of how the protagonist Hazel moved and interacted with the environment. Platforming appears to be a big part of exploration, with Hazel having abilities that let her double-jump, glide, and grapple. Additionally, we also get a taste of the combat. Hazel confronts a minor boss and shows off some combo moves, abilities, and dodging.
South of Midnight Story Trailer
The Story Trailer for South of Midnight was released on January 23, 2025, and provides a much more in-depth look at the narrative and characters in the game. The story starts with Hazel and her mother preparing for a hurricane, with the wind and rain already blowing outside. An argument sends Hazel out of the trailer in anger, then before she can return a rush of water washes the trailer away.
Consequently, this begins the adventure of the game, as Hazel discovers her powers as a Weaver and begins her search for her mom. Along the way she meets a catfish guide and companion, and has to fight her way through monsters from folklore.
South of Midnight Stop Motion Trailers
The Stop Motion Trailer was released on February 3, 2025, and is entirely done with real stop motion techniques and filmmaking. Moreover, it’s meant to serve as a mood video, rather than a representation of actual gameplay.
