Given that the anime is unlikely to return anytime soon, fans continue to revisit both the 1999 and 2011 versions of the anime. 1) Killua Rips Out Johness’ Heart
The memorable showdown between Killua Zoldyck and Johness the Dissector took place during the third phase of the 287th Hunter Exam. The bout was designed to be a deathmatch, meaning that only one person could emerge from the match victorious and alive. Although Johness was prepared to rip Killua apart, their actual fight lasted mere seconds. Before Johness could even land a single attack, Killua blitzed his opponent, swiftly ripping his heart out and crushing it in front of him when Johness asked for it back.
While this moment may not be as brutal upon revisiting the series, it set the tone for the show pretty early on. Moreover, almost no one expected a 12-year-old child to rip out the heart of an adult, and a mass murderer at that. This moment further proved that Hunter X Hunter is anything but a typical shonen anime, especially since it never shied away from featuring brutal displays of violence.
2) Gon’s Transformation
Gon Freecss’ transformation into his fearsome adult form is something no one saw coming. It was a development that came entirely out of the blue. This is because no one expected Gon to go so far off the deep end that he would completely give up on his potential and future just to defeat a single enemy.
After witnessing Kite’s lifeless body being used as a training doll and realizing that Neferpitou wouldn’t be able to heal him, Gon’s rage reached a boiling point. He created a Nen contract with himself, where he sacrificed all the Nen he would ever have in his life. The outcome of this contract allowed him to transform into his prime adult form with power almost equal to Meruem. Gon throwing his entire life away just to kill Neferpitou is something that no one expected, making his descent into darkness one of the highlights of the Chimera Ant arc.
3) Neferpitou Probes Pokkle’s Brain
After being ambushed and captured alive by the Chimera Ants, Pokkle was brought into their nest, where he was injected with a strong neurotoxin. Luckily, he had an antidote, which allowed him to move and find a place to hide. However, Pokkle’s luck ran out quickly, as Neferpitou sniffed him out and used him to gain information about Nen.
Although the audience knew that Pokkle was already done for, nobody could have prepared them for what they saw next. After lobotomizing Pokkle, Pitou used a pair of antennae to probe his exposed brain. The horrifying look on Pokkle’s face as his brain was quite literally being scrambled by Pitou was a sight that still haunts many
4) Kite’s Death
Over the course of his appearances, Kite proved to be a really strong Hunter. Moreover, he had become a mentor figure for Gon and Killua—making his eventual demise all the more devastating. In fact, the moment Neferpitou attacked Kite and severed his arm, fans knew that it might be the end for the beloved character.
After Killua barely managed to escape with Gon, Kite faced off against the Royal Guard. Unfortunately, he was no match for Pitou, as the next time that fans saw him, Pitou was caressing his severed head on their lap. This moment came as a shock to many, especially since no one expected a Hunter as strong as Kite to lose in such a hopeless fashion. It also proved that the Chimera Ants were a far bigger threat than anyone had anticipated.

For all its shocking and jaw-dropping twists, there were several moments in Hunter X Hunter that fans felt were inevitable. 1) Gon Meeting Ging
Gon Freecss meeting his father, the renowned Hunter Ging Freecss, is something almost everyone had anticipated since the beginning of the series. In fact, it was Gon’s only motivation for becoming a Hunter. As such, fans knew that Gon meeting his father was something that had to happen.
When the moment finally arrived in the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, it felt like the culmination of everything Gon had endured. Moreover, their meeting wasn’t dramatic or over-the-top. Instead, it was understated, with Ging casually acknowledging Gon’s presence. It also marked the conclusion of the 2011 version of the Hunter X Hunter anime. Ending the anime on such a high note helped cement its place at the top of the anime industry.
2) Meruem’s Death
As invincible and untouchable as the King of the Chimera Ants seemed, fans knew that his death was inevitable. The fact that he was the strongest being in the anime meant that he was destined to die. Meruem’s fate was sealed the moment he defeated Isaac Netero, the Chairman of the Hunter Association, in their monumental showdown. In fact, from the moment Netero activated the Rose Bomb implanted in his heart, it became clear that Meruem’s end was near. That being said, his death was not marked by violence or hatred. Instead, it was surprisingly yet heartbreakingly tender. What’s more, his final moments with Komugi, the blind Gungi player who taught him humanity, left fans in a pool of tears.

After Gon formed a Nen contract that transformed him into his prime adult form, fans feared that his time in the show might be coming to an end. In fact, Gon himself was not hesitant to throw away his potential and future just so he could kill Pitou.
At the same time, many knew that Gon’s best friend, Killua, would come to his rescue once again. Using Alluka’s wish-granting powers, Killua risked everything to bring his best friend back from the brink of death. Although the outcome may have been predictable, the journey was anything but. Moreover, fans knew that it was unlikely for Gon to bite the dust before he achieved his lifelong goal of meeting his father.
4) Hisoka Betraying the Phantom Troupe
Hisoka Morow betraying the Phantom Troupe came as a surprise to no one. In fact, he joined the Phantom Troupe under false pretenses to begin with. His only reason for joining the group was to fight the leader, Chrollo Lucilfer. As such, his eventual betrayal was more or less expected by everyone.
Hisoka’s actual betrayal took place in the Succession Conquest arc of the manga. Following his thorough defeat and subsequent death at the hands of Chrollo, Hisoka managed to use his Bungee Gum ability to restart his heart and lungs. Immediately after his revival, Hisoka killed two members of the Phantom Troupe, Shalnark and Kortopi, leaving only Machi alive to warn the rest of the Phantom Troupe of his intentions to hunt and kill them.
