Zoro has not died in One Piece, though there are several viable theories regarding his passing that could be proven true. Let us take a closer look at this.
Why Did Fans Think Zoro Died in One Piece?
During the raid on Onigashima in the Wano Arc, the main characters were gearing up for the final battle of this saga. Having to face off against Big Mom, Kaido, and the Beasts Pirates, the alliance between pirates and samurai had begun their final stand.
With the various match-ups on this large battlefield, Zoro eventually came to face King, Kaido’s right-hand man. Being a talented swordsman in his own right as well as his Ryu Ryu no Mi, King seemed to be having the edge in the battle.
However, remembering his sense of purpose and the stakes, Zoro was able to use his King of Hell Three Sword Technique combined with Haki to land the final blow to King. This was a battle that tested his endurance, leaving him severely injured.
When he seemed to be on the brink of death, fans were shocked to find a shinigami showing up in front of him. The appearance of the shinigami signifies death and has never happened before in One Piece.
Believing that this momentous occasion finally spelt the end of the renowned swordsman, fans watched the shinigami swing his scythe. The scene then cuts, leaving viewers to ponder about the character’s fate.
Did Zoro Die in One Piece?
Zoro has not died in One Piece, according to what we currently know. However, there are debates regarding him being “alive.”
After his encounter with the shinigami, we later find that Zoro has been rescued by Franky and healed by Chopper. Following Luffy defeating Kaido, he joins the Straw Hats in their celebrations. Due to the enigmatic nature of Zoro’s encounter with the reaper, however, many fans believe that he had momentarily died. This is because of the extent of damages he suffered against King. In addition, Zoro had eaten the Minks’ medicine for his battle, which is infamous for brutal aftereffects. However, he seemed to have faced none of its consequences.

He has an unwavering will, determination, and immense honor. At points where Luffy seemed to be hesitating, Zoro stepped in to guide him the right way. This was mainly seen when Usopp left the crew. Similarly, he also places a lot of trust in his fellow crewmates, though he might not admit it. When Sanji left for Whole Cake Island, Zoro was one of the only people who trusted him to keep his word and come back.
His resolve, relentlessness, and bond with friends form one of the highlights of One Piece.
Will Zoro Die at the End of One Piece?
One Piece has always been a series that does not feature a lot of on-screen deaths and majorly mentions them through flashbacks. As we head into the final saga of the series, however, fans believe we may be in for a big twist.
What better way to completely raise the danger of the series than to kill one of Luffy’s closest friends? This would take the intensity through the roof while providing Luffy with a reason to potentially deal with the antagonists for good.
It is unclear whether this would happen before or after he defeats Mihawk, but many believe this ultimate act of sacrifice would serve as a poignant moment in the series. His sudden meeting with the shinigami could also be foreshadowing for this very moment.
However, this would be a very drastic shift in tone. Given the fantastical elements of One Piece and Zoro’s resilience, it’s likely his arc won’t end in tragedy but in victory. Additionally, making him die, regardless of whether he has achieved his dreams, would lessen the impact of him finally becoming the strongest swordsman.
Therefore, while it is still possible for Zoro to die at the end of One Piece, the probability is not very high.
