Although it is not compulsory to play Frostpunk 1 before the new Frostpunk 2 drops, you may still benefit from playing the predecessor.
Frostpunk 2 is about to be released very soon on September 20, 2024. As such, you may wonder if you need to play Frostpunk 1 before diving into the new installment.
In short, you do not need to play Frostpunk 1 before stepping into Frostpunk 2. The stories have no connection, and the latter is an entirely independent title. That being said, it may benefit you to play Frostpunk 1 before the next iteration drops.
Is Frostpunk 2 Related to Frostpunk 1?
Frostpunk 2 is not related to Frostpunk 1. It is not a sequel, but rather a new iteration of the game altogether. As such, you don’t need to play the first title to fully experience the post-apocalyptic world of Frostpunk 2.
The core concepts remain the same – you will be in charge of making your city progress and thrive while facing hardships. However, your journey from Frostpunk 1 will not be continued in the new game. Playing Frostpunk 1 before Frostpunk 2 is thus not a compulsory requirement.
Why Should You Play Frostpunk 1?
You may still benefit from playing Frostpunk 1 if you want to delve into the upcoming installment. Since the core genre and mechanics will remain mostly the same, Frostpunk 1 will give you a good idea of what you will be getting yourself into. In a way, it will help you understand the setting of Frostpunk 2 and prepare yourself accordingly. There may be many dots that you will be able to connect once you have played both games.
Here are some additional reasons why the original Frostpunk 1 is worth your time:
- The game has fantastic mechanics in the strategic city-building genre. You will need to understand and master these for Frostpunk 2 as well.
- Many of the machines from Frostpunk 1 will likely carry over to Frostpunk 2, so knowing their intricacies might give you a strategic advantage.
- There is a healthy amount of lore for you to unearth. If you enjoy video game lore, you will likely spend a lot of time trying to piece together the overarching narrative of Frostpunk 1.
Frostpunk 2 is currently available for pre-order, and you will also be able to play the game in early access if you purchase the Deluxe Edition. Make sure that your PC meets the system requirements for Frostpunk 2 before you purchase the title.
