Why Do Fans Believe Gyro Is Hunter X Hunter’s Main Villain?
Gyro was first mentioned in the Chimera Ant Arc, though his first and last appearance came in a highly unorthodox manner. His presence loomed in the background, as Togashi specifically pointed out that he was in the same location as Gon.
Despite giving us insight into this character’s backstory and his connection to key Chimera Ants, however, Gyro never met the main cast. In contrast, we never saw him interacting with any other character. He came and left as an enigma, only being talked about by the narrator and his followers.
This was highly unusual since Togashi never introduced an element for which he didn’t have greater plans. In the short time we got acquainted with Gyro, we got to know of his important position in the world. He was a harbinger of chaos who wished to spread darkness. His tragic past has made him a man enveloped in darkness. Gyro wishes to spread destruction around the world due to his intense hatred for humanity. For this purpose, he developed D², a mysterious drug meant to be addictive and cause ruin.

Most importantly, Gyro has one of the strongest mentalities in Hunter x Hunter. He was turned into a Chimera Ant but almost immediately rejected their indoctrination. Rather, Gyro retained his memories and his pride. He is also currently a Chimera Ant, due to which his senses and physical abilities have likely been enhanced.
Gyro’s Role in Hunter x Hunter
Gyro’s first proper appearance in Hunter x Hunter came through his backstory. This describes the time when he grew up in a construction camp under his abusive and drunk father. Though his parent restricted his entire life, Gyro viewed his father as his god.
There were two main reasons for this: the first was that Gyro was nursed back to health by his father when he was sick, and the second was that his father never asked him to leave. Unfortunately, Gyro’s world was turned upside down when he discovered the truth.
A boy who knew him revealed how it was a neighbor who took care of Gyro. His father didn’t pay heed to whether his son lived or died. This disillusioned Gyro, making him realize the universe didn’t care about him.
He decided to break his glass ceiling, killing his father with a hammer and leaving the camp. Wishing to spread darkness among humanity, Gyro created NGL and started his drug empire. Right when his position looked comfortable, however, the Chimera Ants invaded.
While Gyro himself was eaten and reborn as an ant, his tenacity prevented him from forgetting his human memories. He considered himself to be a king, staying true to his purpose. Therefore, Gyro decided to start over, leaving town. According to his followers, such as Welfin, Gyro is currently rebuilding his empire in Meteor City.
Hence, Gyro is currently on the path to reaching the pinnacle yet again. His allies are naturally drawn to him, seeking him out to show their support. Hunter x Hunter is known for long-term payoffs, and we can only hope to see Gyro’s main purpose once the series returns from hiatus.
