One Piece is renowned for its expansive world, detailed lore and diverse cast. The series introduces a variety of races across each landscape, exploring unique cultures, practices and characteristics. Join us as we explore every single race explored in One Piece so far.

Natural Races

This group is made through natural reproduction, though divided into various races and tribes within the races. These include:

1) Humans

The humans as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Humans are the most common race found in the One Piece world, sharing similar functions to real life. Their designs have a flair of the One Piece design, but they do not have any outrageous features.

However, this doesn’t mean they aren’t distinctive, as each one has different heights, builds and strengths. They are active in various fields, such as politics, science, and more, working towards raising their position in the world. Humans are also notably the most discriminatory in the series, caused by their dominance.

This doesn’t mean every human is evil, but simply certain sections. Some humans are divided into tribes based on their circumstances and upbringing.

A) Kumate Tribe

The Kumate Tribe are an isolated race of humans who have silver hair and identical noses. They are violent and have cannibalistic tendencies, possessing similar dressing sense and face paint. The Kumate Tribe live on an island in East Blue and were featured in the Buggy’s Crew Adventure Chronicles cover story.

B) Kuja Tribe

The Kuja Tribe are a popular race of warrior women who live on Amazon Lily and are ruled by Boa Hancock. They are similar to humans but only give birth to females who have a natural talent in Haki and a connection with snakes. Up until Luffy’s visit, most women from this tribe were unaware of men and the ways of the world.

C) Torino Tribe

Hailing from the Torino Kingdom, the Torino Tribe are short and bulky humans who are all around 1.2 meters tall. They seem to live simply in an ancient manner but are highly knowledgeable in medicine and innovation. Chopper was notably sent here during the time-skip.

D) World Nobles

World Nobles are the most hated class of humans, residing in Mary Geoise as descendants of the founding kingdoms of the World Government. Also called Celestial Dragons, they consider themselves gods above all others. They openly discriminate against other races, refusing even to breathe the same air as them.

Their negative mindset, control over nations, and promotion of vile acts such as slavery serve as the main motivation for the heroes’ quest for justice.

2) Fish-Men

Fish-Men are aquatic, water-breathing humanoids who have traits inspired by specific sea creatures. They possess both lungs and gills, are much stronger than humans from birth, and can survive on both land and sea. The Fish-Men are one of the most important groups in One Piece, having ties to both Joy Boy and Luffy.

Introduced as antagonists, they aim to cause chaos in response to their race’s unfair treatment by the World Nobles. However, as the series proceeded, we got to know of the other more positive parts of the species residing in the Ryugu Kingdom.

3) Giants

As the name indicates, Giants are a huge race who resemble humans in every aspect apart from their enormous size. The smallest of the giants is 12 metres, while the tallest is 180 metres. Most Giants live in Elbaph, a country in the New World that was ruled by Harald till his death.

Apart from the regular Giants, the two specific classifications among them are the Ancient Giants and the mysterious tribe of the Yeti Cool Brothers. This race is the main focus of the Elbaph Arc, connected to both Nika and One Piece’s history.

4) Merfolk

Merfolk refers to individuals with the upper bodies of humans and lower bodies of fish. They are different from Fish-Men but can also live on both land and sea. Male Merfolk are called Mermen while females are Mermaids.

The tails of Mermaids split when they are 30, allowing them to walk easier on land. Most Mefolk follow King Neptune and Shirahoshi, wishing to create peaceful relations with humans.

5) Sky Island Residents

Enel as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Sky Island Residents are people who came to the world from the Moon, notably dividing into 3 tribes. They resemble humanoids save for the distinctive wings on their back. The subgroups among the residents are divided based on where they live and the shape of their wings.

Skypieans have shorter and thicker wings and settled on Angel Island. The Shandians reside in the Blue Sea and have wings that point upwards like the Skypieans. However, they have more feathers on their wings. Finally, the Birkans reside in Birka and have downward-pointed wings.

Most Sky Island Residents lived under Enel’s rule, be it through fear or reverence. They worship Fairy Vearth and dream of reaching the land.

6) Mink Tribe

The Minks as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Minks are humanoid warriors resembling furry mammals. Like Fish-Men, they are linked to specific animals and are born as natural fighters. Most Minks reside in Zou atop Zunesha, isolated from the rest of the world. They have a common special move called Electro, resulting in a potent electric discharge.

7) Longarm Tribe

As indicated by the name, the Longarm tribe are similar to humans but possess unnaturally long arms. They have an extra elbow in each arm and engage in a bitter, long-lasting rivalry against the Longleg Tribe. The captain of the On Air Pirates, Scratchmen Apoo, is notably a member of this group.

8) Longleg Tribe

The Longleg Tribe are enemies of the Longarm tribe, distinguished by their disproportionately long legs. The Longleg Tribe’s legs are extremely strong but are also their weakness due to how exposed they are. Tamago is a naturally Longled Tribe member, while there are half-human variants such as Charlotte Smoothie and Charlotte Cinnamon.

9) Three-Eye Tribe

The Three-Eye Tribe are an overshadowed yet extremely important tribe in One Piece whose members can hear the Voice of All Things. As a result, they can also read Poneglyphs, but their appearances are very rare. Charlotte Pudding is the only Three-Eye Tribe member we see in One Piece, having her third eye on her forehead. However, she has yet to awaken the abilities unique to her tribe.

10)  Dwarves

Much like the beloved beings from other fantasy tales, Dwarves in One Piece are extremely small people and can easily fit inside a human’s hand. Along with this, they can be differentiated through their big fluffy tails. The size of Dwarves shouldn’t fool anyone, as they are extremely quick and strong. Unfortunately, those such as the Tontatta Tribe are also very gullible.

11) Snakeneck Tribe

The Snakeneck Tribe possesses individuals who are slim and have long, slender necks, symbolizing the group’s name. Charlotte family members, such as Mondee and Amande, are part of this tribe. However, this tribe is yet to become a central focus of the storyline.

12) Kinokobito

Much like the Snakeneck Tribe, the Kinokobito are another group we know little about apart from their appearance. This group has a mushroom-shaped body and four legs. A member of the tribe was seen trapped by Big Mom in Mont-d’Or’s book.

13) Lunarians

Lunarians are a significant species who have silver hair, brown skin, and black wings on their back. They can ignite these wings on fire, manipulating fearsome flames. The race used to live in the Red Line but is currently nearly extinct. King is the only natural member, while Seraphim Pacifistas have also been made based on his lineage.

14) Fairies

Fairies are a small species with wings who appear in the One Piece Picture Book. They live on an unnamed island in Paradise and were part of the non-canon Luffy and Chopper’s Secret Adventure.

Hybrid Races

Since One Piece has so many races in its world, it is natural that individuals from different groups should form relations. As a result, hybrid races are created. They possess key traits from both their lineages but can often also not have features that distinguish each. The hybrid races in One Piece include:

1) Wotan

Big Pan as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Wotans are hybrids possessing the genes of both Giants and Fish-Men. They are not as big as Giants but are still of considerable size. Additionally, Wotans possess immense strength, much like the two bloodlines they come from. One Piece has only featured two Wotans till now, namely Big Pan from the Foxy Pirates and Sebastian from the World Pirates.

2) Longlimb Human

The Longlimb Humans as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Longlimb Humans are individuals created from the union between Longlegs and Longarms. They are extremely scarce due to the tensions between the tribes. These beings, though never shown properly in One Piece, likely have double-jointed legs and arms. We only get a brief glimpse at a Longlim captured by Big Mom in Mont-d’Or’s book.

3) Longlimbnecks

Longlimbnecks are an enigmatic race only known through Scopper Gaban’s words. They are likely a mix of Longarms, Longlegs, and Snakenecks.

4) Buccaneer

Buccaneers are a unique and mysterious race, having the blood of the Giants. They are not a result of the breeding between races, and their reason for being is a mystery. Nevertheless, the Buccaneers are still large in size, as seen in Kuma’s case. They are also near-extinct due to facing persecution from the World Government.

5) Dosundada

Dosundadas are another hybrid race mentioned by Scopper Gaban. Unfortunately, apart from the single mention, One Piece has not revealed any information regarding them.

Artificial Races

As the name suggests, several artificial races in One Piece were created through unnatural means. They can be born as a result of experiments, Devil Fruit powers, and many more.

1) Automata

Automata are small robots built by the Moon People before they left. These beings, though not having flesh and blood, seem like small animals. They have identical faces and moustaches, with their outfits distinguishing them. They are notably following Enel on the Moon right now, showcased through the One Piece cover story Enel’s Great Space Operations.

2) Cyborgs

As one would imagine, Cyborgs are individuals who have been modified through technology for better functioning. These can involve cybernetics to replace body parts, additional defenses and devastating weapons. As seen through Franky’s case, apart from their enhancements, Cyborgs’ personalities are not necessarily different from humans.

3) Zombies

Zombies are corpses that have been brought back to life by being given stolen shadows. Gecko Moria does this through the use of his Devil Fruit – the Kage Kage no Mi. The Zombies have a hint of the original personality of their shadows but have no will of their own. They were the main obstacles the Straw Hats faced in the Thriller Bark Arc.

4) Merveillians

Merveillians are human citizens of Merveille who can fly due to the feathers under their arms. This mutation is caused by their exposure to the drug SIQ. While they majorly appear only in non-canon content, the fearsome Shiki is part of this race.

5) Centaurs, Satyrs and Harpy

Centaurs, Satyrs and Harpies are all races that are made inorganically. They involve normal humans who have lost their body parts and had them replaced. Trafalgar Law’s Ope Ope no Mi primarily creates these races, first revealed in Punk Hazard.

The popular Centaur Brownbeard became the boss of the Centaur Patrol Unit, leading others of his kind. While no notable Satyr exists, Monet stands out as a Harpy with bird-like limbs.

6) Toys

Sugar and her Toys as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Toys are another artificial race created by a Devil Fruit, in particular Sugar’s Hobi Hobi no Mi. Through this, Sugar can make people into a variety of Toys who obey her command. Making matters worse, everyone who knew Sugar’s target would forget about them.

However, they would turn back to normal in the case where Sugar was knocked out. Hence, when she was defeated, Toys ceased to exist in One Piece

7) Homies

Big Mom’s Soru Soru no Mi grants souls to inanimate objects, turning them into Homies. These beings existed in Totto Land, where Big Mom used the tributes of her subjects to drive their existence. They enjoy singing and are very faithful to Big Mom. Those such as Zeus, who possess fragments of the user’s own soul, have displayed frightening powers.

8) Clones

Clones are artificially created beings made using genetic samples. In One Piece, various types of clones exist, each designed for a specific purpose based on their source material. The Germa 66 produces human clones, while the Pacifistas are modeled after Kuma.

Under the Pacifistas, the newer model made to replace the Seven Warlords is the Pacifistas. These are hybrids possessing the lineage of the original Warlords as well as other formidable fighters. The World Government controls them, and Vegapunk considers them the strongest form of humanity.

9) Modified Humans

Modified Humans are those whose genetics are altered to provide them with greater strength and senses. The only example of this is the Vinsmoke family, where Judge forced his children to enhance their bodies.

10) Numbers

The Numbers as seen in the One Piece anime (Image via Toei Animation)

Numbers are huge creatures made from the failed experiments at Punk Hazard. Though initially meant to mirror the Ancient Giants, they did not match their prowess and were purchased by Kaido.

The Numbers’ size is similar to that of Oars, but they vary in color and design. They also have little intellect, merely present in Kaido’s group for the dominating presence.

Extraterrestrial Races

While the main One Piece narrative takes place in one world, it has occasionally given us glimpses into what lies outside. The Moon is the most known location, though it is considered by many to be non-canon. Nevertheless, there is always the chance that Oda makes them relevant to the main narrative. The only extraterrestrial race in One Piece is:

1) Space Pirates

The Space Pirates as seen in the One Piece manga (Image via Shueisha)

Space Pirates are a crew of Moon miners Enel encounters in the Enel’s Great Space Operations cover story. Little is known about them, but they were quick to react to Enel’s presence and swiftly attacked him. They were researching the winged people before being destroyed by the antagonist. Hence, their current fate is unknown.
