If full-blown electric personalities were a thing, Kaminari Denki from My Hero Academia would be at the top of the list for Class 1-A students. He stands out from the rest of his classmates due to his lightning-based abilities. But his power level is not so clear. He is able to unleash devastating electrical attacks that can take out several foes.
But he is hamstrung by profound limitations that render him incapable of peak performance. This article examines just how powerful Kaminari really is by looking at his quirk’s mechanics, strengths, weaknesses, growth throughout his training, fighting style, and his effectiveness in team scenarios.
Kaminari’s Quirk: Electrification

His Indiscriminate Discharge 1.3 Million Volts can paralyze a dozen or more opponents at maximum power, making him a potent force against groups. This area-of-effect attack doesn’t need to be aimed very carefully, which makes up for his otherwise subpar combat skills.
Another significant advantage is the speed of his attacks. Electricity moves almost instantaneously, giving opponents very little time to dodge or counter once he activates his quirk. This makes Kaminari Denki in My Hero Academia a threat even against faster opponents who might otherwise be able to avoid more conventional attacks.
His quirk also has excellent utility outside of direct combat. He can power electrical devices, act as a human defibrillator in emergencies, and even jam electronic signals. On top of that, Kaminari’s quirk grants him passive electrical resistance. This restriction limits the frequency and intensity of when Kaminari can use his powers in a fight. However, unlike other characters who might experience fatigue from activating their quirks too often, Kaminari is defenseless and incapable of doing anything. Timing will therefore be key for him, as entering a fight in full-power mode could easily leave him open to any remaining foes.
Another major weakness is his lack of precision control. Kaminari is able to attack in a general direction but can’t seem to target specific opponents with his attacks. His electricity has a tendency to radiate outward in all directions, potentially hurting allies as well as enemies. This “friendly fire” issue makes him a potent liability in a team unless he can isolate himself from allies before detonating.

Despite My Hero Academia initially portraying Kaminari Denki as a patently “useless” character, he has improved substantially. His training has mostly focused on lengthening the amount of electricity he’s able to produce before short-circuiting and utilizing support gear to help channel his attacks.
He made a big improvement with the development of his Sharpshooting Gear. It grants him the ability to concentrate his electricity into focused beams, as opposed to his normal indiscriminate release. Now, he can focus on one particular target, thanks to these support items, without bouncing and hitting other targets in the area. This minimizes the chances of his allies getting injured while conserving energy.
Kaminari has also worked on increasing his overall wattage limit. Kaminari’s fighting style is usually about waiting for the perfect moment to unleash his power. He has so many restrictions put on his quirk that he can’t afford to be frivolous about using it. This means he has to fight more carefully in the majority of battles.
During combat, Kaminari will typically want to keep his distance from his enemies so that he will be able to discharge without putting himself at immediate risk. This long-range combat style complements his quirk. However, this can be neutralized by enemies who get up close quickly or have their own projectile-based abilities.
Using his support equipment, his combat style has developed to integrate more focused electrical attacks. He can now single out individual opponents or weak points to target, making him more tactically nimble and less likely to overexert himself for no reason.
Kaminari does display some basic proficiency in hand-to-hand fighting techniques he learned at U.A. when he’s forced into close combat. However, it’s clear that is not where his strength lies. His improved directing equipment has made him more valuable in precision operations as well. Where he may have previously been a bit of a liability in hostage scenarios, his new ability to choose specific targets marks him as a far more useful weapon in complex team missions.
