How Powerful is the Eternity Devil in Chainsaw Man? Analyzing the powers, feats, and abilities of the fearsome devil.

Devils truly are a terrifying concept in Chainsaw Man. They essentially are supernatural creatures that embody the fear their “name” represents. In simple words, they are monsters whose names correlate to a particular concept. These concepts can range from highly tangible items like Fish and Tomato to entirely abstract ideas like Future and Death.
The world of Chainsaw Man consists of absolute nightmares like the Gun Devil, cosmic horrors like the Darkness Devil, and deranged lunatics like the Control Devil. And then there’s the Eternity Devil—an entity that is, quite frankly, not as terrifying as its name would imply.
The idea of “eternity” does sound like a nightmare on paper, which is why many of us thought that the Eternity Devil would be one of Chainsaw Man’s strongest Devils. After all, the idea of being trapped in an endless, inescapable loop till the end of time is horrifying. In reality, though, Fujimoto ended up making the Eternity Devil seem like a mid-tier obstacle rather than the nightmare it should have been presented as.
Who Is the Eternity Devil in Chainsaw Man?

Chainsaw Man’s Eternity Devil is basically a Devil that embodies the fear of eternity. It served its role in the story as the main antagonist of two arcs throughout the series—the Eternity Devil arc and the Dating Denji arc. It was one of the many assassins the Gun Devil sent to kill Denji and retrieve Chainsaw Man’s heart.
As the titular antagonist of the Eternity Devil arc, the Eternity Devil lured and trapped Denji, Aki, Power, and the rest of Tokyo Special Division 4 inside the eighth floor of a hotel. Later, in the Dating Denji arc of Chainsaw Man Part 2, the Eternity Devil trapped Denji once again, alongside Asa Mitaka and the Devil Hunter Club in an aquarium—only this time, it was working on Fami, aka the Famine Devil’s orders.
The Eternity Devil thrives on humanity’s fear of eternity. Conceptually, this should make it incredibly powerful—because, let’s be honest, the basic idea of eternity sounds like a gigantic pain. The fear of endless suffering, being stuck in a never-ending loop, and eventually losing all sense of time are fears that are rooted deeply in the human psyche.
But for some reason, the Eternity Devil never quite lived up to this. Initially, it made it seem like Denji and company had no means of escaping from its clutches. However, it was quickly reduced to an overgrown lump of flesh, begging Denji to put it out of its misery. And that’s not exactly the kind of image an all-powerful, fearsome, and formidable Devil should have. It’d be safe to say that it seemed more like a desperate hostage taker who bit off more than it could chew.
Eternity Devil’s Powers and Abilities in Chainsaw Man

Despite being underwhelming in a narrative sense, the Eternity Devil does have quite a solid set of abilities. Its most significant ability is spatial manipulation and looping time. It basically creates a pocket dimension inside, which it can lure and trap any living being. Once trapped, any escape from this dimension is virtually impossible. This particular ability of the Eternity Devil likely became exponentially stronger after consuming a fragment of the Gun Devil.
This dimension essentially becomes the Eternity Devil’s stomach. Inside its stomach, time remains frozen, completely cut off from the outside world. Thus, it can effectively trap its victims in an endless time loop. No matter how much someone tries to leave, they always end up right where they started. Additionally, the Eternity Devil is practically immortal inside its pocket dimension. It can be injured for sure, but it can never be killed.
It can also create an avatar of sorts—which is basically a monstrous, bloated glob of flesh that tries to hunt down anyone inside its stomach. It’s also worth mentioning that this “avatar” possesses a great deal of physical strength and can tear apart the average Devil Hunter with brute force.
On paper, these abilities do sound terrifying. But what truly made the Eternity Devil’s character seem like a complete joke is that it ended up being outplayed by someone like Denji, whose entire strategy was to basically keep ripping the Eternity Devil apart until it gave up.
Eternity Devil’s Notable Feats in Chainsaw Man

While it never really did anything groundbreaking throughout the series, the Eternity Devil did accomplish a few things. For starters, it successfully managed to lure, trap, and isolate an entire division of Devil Hunters, including Aki and Himeno, who are veterans in combating Devils. This alone is pretty impressive, considering that not many Devils manage to trap so many Hunters at once.
As mentioned earlier, the Eternity Devil’s power is to basically feed on humanity’s fear of eternity. And it showed just how effective this power can be under the right circumstances when it completely broke Kobeni down mentally to the point where she actually attacked Denji. Now, making Kobeni lose her mind isn’t that hard, given that she’s basically the walking embodiment of stress.
Regardless, it’s still quite impressive how quickly the Eternity Devil managed to turn the Devil Hunters against Denji. After making them realize that there was no way out, it offered the Hunters a deal—if they killed Denji, it would let them go. And as one would expect, such circumstances pushed almost half of the squad to consider sacrificing Denji.
Unfortunately for the Eternity Devil, its “brilliant” plan fell apart when Denji realized that if he kept cutting into the Devil with his chainsaws, it would feel pain perpetually. Now, the Eternity Devil is immortal, but by no means was it invincible. And it sure was no fan of feeling pain, which is why it gave up after three days of constant pain and begged Denji to put it out of its misery.
How Powerful Is the Eternity Devil in Chainsaw Man?

So, how strong exactly is the Eternity Devil? On a scale of a bottom-feeding Devil to a Gun Devil-level nightmare, the Eternity Devil probably ranks somewhere in between—perhaps leaning more to the former side. Theoretically, it would be a nightmare for just about any Devil Hunter since it could trap them until they gave up and died. However, someone like Denji, who could regenerate indefinitely by consuming blood, was probably the worst possible match for the Eternity Devil.
The outcome of their fight made the Eternity Devil seem like a joke. Again, its powers certainly had the potential to be truly terrifying, but they turned out to be pretty useless against another immortal opponent. Perhaps the most off-putting thing about the Eternity Devil is that, unlike other Devils, it was quite easy to panic. The moment it realized that Denji was more unhinged than it was, it completely broke down and started begging for mercy.
Therefore, in the grand scheme of things, the Eternity Devil is probably a mid-tier Devil. Against the right opponent, it would be unbeatable. Against someone like Denji? It’s a one-episode villain at best. It’s obviously significantly stronger than fodders like the Bat Devil. However, it certainly is nowhere near the likes of upper-tier Devils like the Control Devil, Darkness Devil, or the Gun Devil.
Conclusion
Overall, the Eternity Devil’s portrayal in Chainsaw Man is disappointing, to say the least. It could have been one of the series’ scariest villains, but ended up being a fleshy, crying mess by the end of its first fight. Its abilities are powerful in theory, but its cowardice and overall incompetence reduced it to irrelevancy.
