Ranked highly in the hierarchy, Ace was immensely loyal to Whitebeard and faithfully served his goal of becoming the Pirate King.
Due to his mastery over the Mera Mera no Mi’s flames, Ace was known as “Fire Fist.” Much like Luffy, Ace was impulsive but kindhearted. He helped those in need wherever possible, staying true to his friends, allies, and captain to the very end.
Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is the exact opposite of Ace. He was a member of the Whitebeard Pirates’ second division, serving under Ace. Blackbeard has no honest bone in his body, solely acting in service of himself.
He lives life in the freest way possible, though this often involves creating chaos and destruction. His relentless thirst for power and glory eventually revealed his backstabbing nature, resulting in his battle against Ace.
Why Did Ace and Blackbeard Fight?
Blackbeard’s sole purpose for joining the Whitebeard Pirates was to find the Yami Yami no Mi, known to be the most evil Devil Fruit. While this fruit was notoriously hard to find, he believed his best chance was with this crew.
His efforts finally paid off, as Thatch, the fourth division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, found the fruit. However, Whitebeard’s crew had a rule of “finders keepers.” Overcome by his selfish nature, Blackbeard killed Thatch, taking the fruit’s darkness powers for himself.
He then fled, eventually establishing his own crew—the Blackbeard Pirates. Upon discovering Blackbeard’s betrayal, Ace was personally offended. In addition to the disorder being created among his captain’s ranks, Blackbeard had killed one of Ace’s comrades.

Ace and Blackbeard’s fight on Banaro Island was nothing short of spectacular. Soon after meeting Ace, Blackbeard jokingly referred to him as his commander. Following this, he invited Ace to join his crew, aiming to rise in stature by capturing Luffy.
At this point, Ace revealed that Luffy was his brother. When he expressed how he would prevent Blackbeard’s efforts, he was attacked by both Van Augur and Jesus Burgess, faced with bullets and an entire building thrown at him. However, due to his Logia-type Devil Fruit, which allowed him to transform his entire body into fire, along with his own strength, Ace effortlessly countered them. He then launched an attack against Blackbeard’s crew, dominating them with explosive strikes.
After telling his crew they would be no match for Ace, Blackbeard personally entered the fight. He revealed his motive for killing Thatch, subsequently controlling darkness to destroy an entire town. Despite this, Ace was unimpressed, still confident in his victory. At the same time, he wondered why his attacks were affecting Blackbeard, who also possessed a Logia-type fruit. After a grand show of fire and darkness on Banaro Island, fans were unaware of both Ace and Blackbeard’s fate for a long time. However, the series later revealed that Blackbeard had won the battle. Making matters worse, he had captured Ace and delivered him to the World Government.
This allowed him to become a new Warlord of the Sea. Ace, on the other hand, was sent to Impel Down, set for execution. This began the greatest war in One Piece to this day, the Marineford War. Having heard of his “son” being captured, Whitebeard set out with all his troops to free him.
On the opposing side, all the Marine forces, the Admirals, Vice Admirals, and Warlords of the Sea were prepared to face him. Additionally, Luffy was on his own journey toward saving his brother.
