The world of Solo Leveling is a dangerous one, living under the constant threat of monstrous creatures and evil entities. In order to maintain public safety, hunters gifted with supernatural powers fight back against these invaders. However, even hunters need regulatory authorities to ensure they don’t go wild. This is where the Hunter Association comes in.

The Hunter Association is akin to the new government in Korea, overseeing the gates, guilds, and hunters of the country. It serves multiple purposes in the series and is also directly connected to the protagonist. Here is a closer look at the organization.

What Is the Hunter Association in Solo Leveling?

The Hunter Association, also known as the Korean Hunters Association, is a body that handles everything related to hunters and gates in the world. Its primary function is to guarantee that the delicate balance of power between the government and the guilds is never broken. It is believed that without its presence, the country would have already been doomed due to the selfishness of hunters.

The Hunter Association is in charge of most administrative tasks, starting right from issuing licenses and classifying hunters into ranks. It assigns its officers to high-class dungeon outbreaks, protecting the common citizens. Additionally, it also has individuals in charge of investigation and research.

While the Hunter Association possesses gates and dungeons of its own, these are less impressive when compared to the other guilds. Despite the monopolistic nature of each individual guild, the Association still holds great power mainly due to its Chairman.

It is important to note that each country has its own Hunter Association. Solo Leveling mainly focuses on South Korea’s branch.

Notable Members of the Hunter Association

As mentioned earlier, the Hunter Association has mainly earned its position due to its Chairman and some very talented people. However, the series doesn’t delve into most of its members, only featuring a few. These include:

  • Go Gunhee – The Chairman of the Association and an S-Rank Hunter. He has a high sense of morality, placing public good over all else. He is also the lifeblood of the organization, having connections in high places and drawing the respect of all.
  • Woo Jinchul – The A-Rank Chief Inspector of the Hunter Association who is very analytical and dedicated. He was one of the first to believe Jinwoo had changed after the Double Dungeon Incident.
  • Jung Gi-Soo – An Assistant Manager at the Evaluation Office who guided Jinwoo during his re-evaluation.
  • Kang Taeshik – A B-Rank Hunter who was in the Association’s surveillance team and a secretive hitman. Due to his brutal ways, Jinwoo killed him early in the series.

Why Did the Hunter Association Want Sung Jinwoo?

Soon after Sung Jinwoo was declared Korea’s newest S-Rank Hunter, he was invited to meet Go Gunhee from the Hunter Association. While talking with him, the Chairman expressed the fickle state of Korea’s balance, managed between the Top 5 Guilds and the Association.

Should Jinwoo join any guild, the country would go into disarray since the law wasn’t enough to restrict hunters. Hence, the Chairman asked Jinwoo to join the Association, promising him authority while also recognizing his skills. Gunhee also realized he was getting older and needed a new face for the Association.

Unfortunately, the protagonist refused since he wished to hunt inside dungeons. Upon hearing this, Gunhee was more ecstatic than disappointed. He was thrilled that Jinwoo wasn’t selfish like other hunters, wishing to stick to fighting and leveling up. The Chairman was satisfied by this answer, foreseeing the huge role Jinwoo would play in the future.

Solo Leveling: Ragnarok follows the life of Jinwoo’s son, Suho, in the alternate timeline he created. While this world is free of Monarchs, they are threatened by new existences – the Outer Gods.

Due to this, gates, mana, and monsters still exist. To combat them, however, the Hunter Association is set up yet again. This is led by the new Chairman, Woo Jinchul. Having been granted knowledge of the original timeline by Jinwoo, Jinchul runs the Association in a similar way to his predecessor.

Hence, by fighting outbreaks rapidly and managing hunters, Jinchul carries on Gunhee’s spirit while being considered a hero in his nation.

Conclusion

The Hunter Association in Solo Leveling serves as the backbone of humanity’s defense against dungeons and magical beasts. While initially appearing as a governing body, its role becomes increasingly significant as Sung Jinwoo’s power keeps increasing. Its importance has carried forward to the sequel, where it remains equally relevant in the battle against the Outer Gods.
