What is a Red Gate in Solo Leveling? Discover what sets this deadly and mysterious gate apart from normal gates, and much more.
Chugong’s Solo Leveling is a universe that takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride through a universe filled with monsters, dungeons, and powerful hunters. Among the various mysterious phenomena in this universe, portals, or “Gates” that connect Earth to otherworldly Dungeons brimming with monsters are commonplace. These gates are undoubtedly dangerous and bring forth death and destruction on an unprecedented scale. Nevertheless, they are the most crucial aspect of the series and are essential to the plot of Solo Leveling.
While Gates were introduced in the very first episode of the anime itself, the ongoing second season featured a specific type of gate, i.e., the Red Gate, which stands out as particularly deadly and dangerous. In essence, a Red Gate is a special type of Gate that completely seals off its entrance once the Hunters pass through it. It basically traps anyone who enters through it and leaves them with only one grim choice – survive or die. That said, let us further explore the mystery of the Red Gates in Solo Leveling, and determine if they are the most dangerous Gate in Solo Leveling.
What Is a Red Gate in Solo Leveling?
In Solo Leveling, a “Gate” acts as a portal that connects the human world to Dungeons. Gates usually have a distinct blue color and remain open until the Dungeon Boss is defeated. The threat level of a Gate is ranked as per the usual S-E Rank system. As mentioned earlier, they usually function predictably – Hunters enter the Gate and are transported to a Dungeon, where they eliminate the monsters and the Dungeon Boss. Subsequently, they exit the Gate once the Dungeon is cleared. However, these rules don’t apply to a Red Gate.
A Red Gate is a rare and lethal anomaly. Unlike normal Gates, a Red Gate does not allow for external intervention until the raid party clears the Dungeon. This means that once the Hunters enter a Red Gate, they are isolated from the outside world and cannot receive help even in the most dire emergencies. The only way to escape a Red Gate is to find and defeat the Dungeon Boss within. However, this isn’t a task many Hunters can accomplish, especially since the threat level of a Red Gate is B-Rank or higher.
To make matters worse, the environment inside Red Gates is harsher and more unpredictable than a normal Gate. This reduces the chances of survival of an average Hunter inside a Red Gate to almost zero. They not only have to battle extremely powerful monsters inside the Red Gate, but they also have to struggle to survive in inhospitable scenarios, including freezing wastelands and scorching deserts.
How Is a Red Gate Different From a Normal Gate?
We can divide Gates in Solo Leveling into two categories – Normal Gates and Red Gates. Aside from their red color, a distinguishing feature of a Red Gate is that it only occurs in a B-Rank or a higher-ranked Gate. At first glance, it is almost indistinguishable from a Normal Gate. However, once a certain number of people step inside, it takes its true form and turns into a Red Gate, blocking the entry and exit from both sides.
Red Gates do not lead to a typical Dungeon. They are notorious for their brutal and unpredictable conditions, as they can either lead to a scorching desert, a snowy wasteland, or a dangerous jungle teeming with poisonous snakes. Apart from trapping Hunters in extreme environments, the most defining feature of Red Gates is that the only way to escape them is to either defeat the Dungeon Boss, or wait till a Dungeon Break occurs. Another scenario where a Red Gate may open, is if the entire raid party dies.
As mentioned earlier, the lowest difficulty level of a Red Gate is B-Rank. This drastically decreases the chances of survival of an average Hunter, unless and until an A-Rank Hunter is present in the raid party. In addition to the risk of monsters killing them, the harsh environment of Red Gates threatens Hunters with the dangers of starvation and heatstroke.
In Which Solo Leveling Arc Did a Red Gate First Appear?
A Red Gate first appeared in the 8th arc of the Solo Leveling manhwa, titled the Red Gate arc. This arc began with Sung Jin-Woo trying to teach his sister’s friend, Han Song-Yi, the dangers associated with being a Hunter. To give her a firsthand experience of being a Hunter, Jin-Woo secured two spots for himself and Song-Yi in the White Tiger Guild’s training exercises.
However, things took a horrible turn when the C-Rank Gate that was being used for the exercise turned out to be a Red Gate. As a result, Sung Jin-Woo, Han Song-Yi, and the rest of the party members found themselves stranded on a freezing, snowy wasteland, where they had to fight for their survival against the Ice Elves.
Are Red Gates the Most Dangerous Gate?
Red Gates are undeniably one of the most dangerous phenomena in the world of Solo Leveling. However, we cannot exactly classify them as the most dangerous Gate in the entirety of Solo Leveling. This is because throughout the series, Red Gates have only appeared twice.
Inside his first Red Gate, Sung Jin-Woo faced a considerable amount of difficulty in defeating the Dungeon Boss, Baruka, by himself. However, by the time the second Red Gate made its appearance, Jin-Woo had become powerful enough to clear it all by himself, that too, in a matter of hours. Moreover, there are several Gates in the series that are far more dangerous than Red Gates – the Jeju Island S-Rank Gate and the Tokyo S-Rank Gate being prominent examples.
Conclusion
While Red Gates may not be the most dangerous Gate, they serve as a stark reminder of the perils and risks Hunters face on a daily basis. From environmental hazards to time-distorting properties, Red Gates challenge Hunters in ways Normal Gates do not, as they often push them to their limits and beyond.
