The world of One Piece features a variety of legendary weapons that help shape the course of battles. Swords are a popular choice among the renowned figures in the series, greatly enhancing their capabilities while having distinctive identities of their own.

We have seen blades such as Zoro’s Enma and Roger’s Ace become memorable in their own right, regardless of being inanimate objects. The most recent addition to this list of intriguing swords is Cerberus, making its first appearance in the Elbaph Arc. So, what is the sword Cerberus in One Piece?

Cerberus is a sword that has “eaten” a Devil Fruit, allowing it to have supernatural powers of its own. At the same time, the abilities of the blade still need to be activated by the user and have already made their mark in the series. Here is a closer look at this sword.

Cerberus, not to be confused with the zombie serving Gecko Moria, is a weapon that has been imbued with a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. Its name is derived from Greek mythology, referring to a giant three-headed dog guarding the underworld.

In its general form, it is simply a sabre that cannot be distinguished from other swords. However, when activated by its user, the blade transforms into a vicious dog with three heads. Each of these heads has a sharp blade emerging from its mouth, capable of piercing the most durable of targets.

When the user commands the sword to scramble, the dog can detach itself from the blade and carry out the wishes of the wielder. It emits flames and doesn’t necessarily need to be near the original body either.

Cerberus is a blade used by Figarland Shamrock, Shanks’ elder twin brother. He is an intimidating individual who was raised under the ideologies of the Celestial Dragons. As a result, his mindset is the exact opposite of his heroic brother’s.

Shamrock is the commander of the God’s Knights, the elite guard of Mary Geoise. Even with his limited screen time, he displays intensity, brutality, and subservience to the Gorosei’s wishes. While he may be an antagonistic figure, one common point One Piece fans agree on is that Shamrock is powerful.

He can comfortably overpower the strongest of the giants and cares little about resorting to cruelty. The story hasn’t delved too deeply into Shamrock’s abilities, but the major source of his strength currently is the sword Cerberus.

Why Is the Sword Cerberus Unique in One Piece?

The sword Cerberus is inherently unique in One Piece for being only one of two blades that have eaten a Devil Fruit. The process of an inanimate object absorbing Devil Fruit powers is still ambiguous at this point, making their presence few and far between.

The only other mention of a sword with Devil Fruit powers is Funkfreed. This is the CP0 agent Spandam’s sword, which can become an elephant powered by the Zou Zou no Mi. Unfortunately, despite the creativity of this blade, it is not very formidable. This is mainly due to Spandam’s lack of mastery in wielding it.

However, Cerberus has already proven itself to be much more fearsome, taking down one of the strongest individuals in the One Piece universe.

Cerberus was used in the Elbaph Arc when Shamrock and Gunko had headed to the underworld to recruit Loki. Unfortunately, the giant was far from cooperative, showing a dismissive attitude and even insulting Shamrock.

Unlike Shanks, Shamrock had a much shorter temper, as he soon proved. Deciding to take another route to conquering Elbaph without involving its prince, he unveiled his sword. Upon activating Cerberus, even the blindfolded Loki could feel its threat.

Shamrock ordered the dog to scramble and indicated that he wished to fatally harm Loki. He soon left the scene, following which the detached heads of Cerberus stabbed Loki with their blades. While we now know this didn’t kill Loki, it was enough to greatly injure and enrage him.

Conclusion

The sword Cerberus in One Piece is a unique and visually striking blade that adds to the diversity of weapons in the series. Wielded by the menacing Shamrock, the sword has already captivated fans by showcasing Devil Fruit powers and harming Loki. As the story heads deeper into the Final Saga, we will be looking forward to its reappearance.
