The world of One Piece is home to countless Devil Fruits that fascinate us with extraordinary abilities, transcending the laws of nature. As the primary power system, they display Oda’s creativity and add multiple layers to the series.

While there are several memorable Devil Fruits in One Piece, one that recently rose to popularity is the Toshi Toshi no Mi. Due to the tragic circumstances surrounding its user and its role in the Egghead Arc, fans have found this to be very impactful. So, what is the Toshi Toshi no Mi in One Piece?

The Toshi Toshi no Mi, or the Age-Age Fruit, is a Devil Fruit that allows its user to manipulate the ages of themselves and others. As the series progressed, several features related to this fruit were revealed that set it apart from the rest. Here is a closer look at the Toshi Toshi no Mi.

The Toshi Toshi no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that turns its user into an Age Manipulation Human, giving them free control over the entire process of aging. This isn’t strictly restricted to just people but can also be used on animals and objects.

Manipulation over age in this scenario doesn’t merely apply to moving them forward in years. Rather, the user can also regress targets back to their younger days. Hence, those affected by the Toshi Toshi no Mi can look similar to children as well as elderly people.

In the case of objects, they can be rapidly turned to dust if desired. During its initial stages, the Toshi Toshi no Mi was primarily used just to disguise oneself and to cripple others during battle. However, its real power was only showcased during the Egghead Arc.

This revealed how the Toshi Toshi no Mi can transform the user into any future form that they can envision for themselves. Therefore, the limit is literally their own imagination, and the stronger their mentality, the more powerful their form will be.

Apart from this, the Toshi Toshi no Mi has its fair share of disadvantages. Its aging effects remain temporary, restoring victims after a while. Additionally, the power will deactivate for the user when they run out of energy or are underwater. To use the main ability of the fruit, the user must firmly believe that their future form can actually exist. If they lack faith in their own inventiveness, their power will be undone.

Nevertheless, this is an ingenious fruit if taken advantage of properly. Thankfully, its user in One Piece does just that.

The Toshi Toshi no Mi’s user is Jewelry Bonney, Kuma’s adopted daughter. Bonney convincingly uses every power of the Devil Fruit, fooling allies and enemies alike and even gaining enough power to take on Celestial Dragons.

Having been born in Mary Geoise to Ginny, she gained her abilities due to Saint Saturn’s experiment of giving an infant a Devil Fruit extract. Soon after this, Kuma took her in, and she lived a happy life with him. However, due to Kuma’s transformation into an emotionless cyborg, Bonney was adamant about finding the truth and saving her father.

Her powers with the Toshi Toshi no Mi greatly helped her efforts in Egghead as she allied with the Straw Hats and faced the ruling powers of the world.

The Different Techniques of the Toshi Toshi no Mi

As we have already seen, the Toshi Toshi no Mi is a flexible Devil Fruit with a wide range of abilities. In its most basic form, it can age targets up or down. However, there are more specific techniques under this fruit. These include:

1) Distortion Future

The most powerful skill of the Toshi Toshi no Mi allows its user to transform into possible future versions of themselves. Bonney is a creative individual who is highly imaginative due to her young age. Hence, she has displayed several applications of Distortion Future. These range from her getting a muscular physique like her father to becoming a large giant.

The most shocking ability, however, is that Bonney can envision herself becoming Nika. Having heard the story of the Sun God her whole life, Bonney draws inspiration from Luffy’s transformation. She gains the protagonist’s rubbery properties and can also land devastating attacks infused with Armament Haki.

2) Toshi Tsuki

The user of the Toshi Toshi no Mi can apply its aging effects through a medium such as weapons or objects. For the Toshi Tsuki, Bonney wields a staff and thrusts it at others, causing them to age. She first used this ability against Vegapunk, turning him into a child. When she transforms a target, their lost years materialize as jewels that scatter around.

3) NDE

Bonney’s aging abilities can be used at long range, as she can fire at targets through a gun and make them age. This notably causes victims to age rapidly, turning into skeletons before being restored to their original form. Though it causes no permanent physical harm, the psychological effect is considerable. As a result, NDE stands for Near-Death Experience.

4) Oil Shock

Finally, Bonney’s ability to age objects is called Oil Shock or Aging Shock. This can cause them to corrode and eventually break. She used this to break a door in Vegapunk’s laboratory.

The Toshi Toshi no Mi’s Significance in One Piece

The Toshi Toshi no Mi is an extremely important Devil Fruit in One Piece, symbolizing Bonney and Kuma’s tragic past and the girl’s resolve to save her father. Since Saint Saturn gave her abilities, it added layers to her eventual confrontation against the Gorosei at Egghead.

Along with this, Bonney’s fruit is one of the few in One Piece that can perfectly copy the abilities of other Devil Fruits. Her transformation into Nika paired perfectly with Luffy and allowed her to defeat the likes of Mars and Saturn.

Conclusion

The Toshi Toshi no Mi is an extremely important part of One Piece, significantly contributing during the Egghead Arc. Although the fruit’s aging powers may seem simple at first glance, they involve several complexities. Consequently, the user’s imagination can make it an extremely overpowered skill. Bonney has proven this through her mental strength and has captivated most of the fanbase.
