In a world where magic is the norm and being plain without one is the anomaly, what is more dangerous than ancient magical creatures? The Devils in Black Clover are powerful beings capable of utter destruction. However, instead of directly posing a threat to the world, these malevolent beings played a more crucial role in Black Clover.

Although most of them wielded magical powers comparable to a natural disaster, they couldn’t exert their full capability on the human world. Why is that the case? These Devils were trapped in the underworld, and it was rare for them to get out of there on their own. If they’re so strong, why were they only limited to the underworld? Why wouldn’t they just invade the human world and take over everything? Let’s tackle the mysteries behind these Black Clover antagonists.

The Devils’ Origin in Black Clover

The Devils in Black Clover were all confined in the underworld. This place was the Devil’s breeding ground and was split into seven levels, with the rulers of the Devils residing mostly at the very bottom. The Devils were an incredibly ancient race. Their true origin was as mysterious as their malevolent mana.

However, the manga revealed that a human could turn into a Devil. Chapter 281 further uncovered this aspect of the story, making the Spade Kingdom’s connection with the Devils in Black Clover clearer. A Devil could be born from a combination of hatred and the power of the underworld. However, they could also emerge from the underworld when a mage summoned them.

Thankfully, there were gates separating the human world and the Devil’s realm. However, it didn’t stop humans from actively seeking out these Devils. In fact, some of them made contracts with the Devils to get a portion of the latter’s power. But, not all Devils were born equal. Some were more powerful than others.

The Four Rankings of Devils

Just like how all knights or mages weren’t equally strong, the Devils in Black Clover also had their hierarchy. The more mana a Devil had, the stronger they got. Each one of them resided in their respective places in the underworld. The deeper into this forbidden realm, the more dangerous the Devils were.

Lower-Rank Devils

First off, the weakest of all Devils belonged to the bottom ranks. This is where you’d find the Devils who were so weak, they’d be easily destroyed with enough magic. These lower-rank Devils also possess little mana to boast, making them vulnerable to anything, even other Devils with a slight difference in power. For instance, Liebe in Black Clover was a Devil without magic power whatsoever. However, his lack of mana was the factor that allowed him to slip into the human world and meet the protagonist, Asta.

Mid-Rank Devils

Entering the mid-rank category, you would find Devils slightly stronger than the little runts that were the low-rank Devils. This is where a simple magic attack won’t be sufficient to kill a Devil. To get rid of Devils of this caliber and above, you’d have to strike their heart with powerful enough arcane magic.

High-Rank Devils

This is where stuff gets serious. A high-rank Devil might bring a calamity if you’re not careful enough in dealing with them. For instance, Zagred, a high-rank Devil, managed to massacre the entire population of the Elf tribe. He didn’t completely rely on brute force to achieve this. Rather, he manipulated the royals and used them as a means to an end.

Supreme Devils

The Supreme Devils were at the very top of the Devil hierarchy. They were the strongest among their own kind, feared, and nobody opposed their power. The strongest among them was Lucifero, who reigned as the ruler of the underworld.

As you already know, the Devils are crucial characters in Black Clover. Especially, when it comes to a few names among their ranks. This post has mentioned some names, so let’s dig deeper into the underworld.

Liebe

Liebe started as a mere, low-ranked Devil in Black Clover. He wasn’t powerful and had little to no mana. However, this is the exact reason why he made it into the human world without a host. His nonexistent mana allowed him to slip through the gates between the underworld and the human world. Liebe changed his perspective on humans when he was adopted by a human, Richita. However, things took a turn when Lucifero killed Richita. This triggered Liebe’s hatred for his own kind and later on, he joined forces with Asta.

Lucifero

Speaking of Lucifero, he was the mightiest among the Devils. In the human world, a group of evil mages called the Dark Triad of the Spade Kingdom hosted Lucifero along with the other Supreme Devils, Megicula, and Beelzebub. Lucifero’s magic focused on manipulating space and gravity. It’s something that would almost incapacitate any mage he fought against. Moreover, with his status as a Supreme Devil, he boasted an almost infinite mana, making his gravity magic even more powerful.

Astaroth

The three Supreme Devils, Lucifero, Megicula, and Beelzebub, were not originally at the top of the chain. To be precise, Megicula wasn’t in this whole trio. There was someone even stronger who reigned as the most powerful Devil in Black Clover, and that was Astaroth. However, Astaroth mysteriously vanished from the underworld without leaving a trace.

How the Devils Controlled Humans in Black Clover

As mentioned before, the Devils couldn’t trespass into the human world because of the gates. However, the gates didn’t stop them from establishing contact with humans. In fact, humans were the ones who commonly sought after these Devils to get a portion of the power drawn from the Devil’s evil mana.

To be a Devil’s host, a human in Black Clover could opt to undergo a binding ritual. In this ritual, the person should attempt to subjugate their Devils by fighting them. Ideally, they win and the Devils would be under their command. However, there were already a lot of cases where the Devils came out victorious and took over the humans in Black Clover.

Conclusion

The Devils in Black Clover are recurring antagonists and certainly have a lot of unique characters in their roster. Contrary to their first impression, not all Devils were out to get humanity. Rather, the Black Clover story covers how Asta met Liebe and figured out that they had a common enemy.

Although the Devils are clearly villains in Black Clover, they play a subtler role. This is especially true considering how they wrapped their influence around the Spade Kingdom. The Devils in Black Clover are cunning and dangerous ancient beings.
