Who is Moegi in Boruto? Explore the significance of this character in the Naruto universe, her abilities, and her role in the Boruto anime.
Boruto is the sequel series of Naruto, which has managed to continue the legacy of the universe and also distinguish itself. While introducing intriguing new characters, the series also carries forward important ones from its predecessor. Along with more popular returning cast members like Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, there are more underrated additions.
Moegi is one such person, initially a minor background character who becomes an important figure in Boruto. However, her significance in the sequel is shown unconventionally. So, who is Moegi in Boruto?
Moegi was the leader of Team 10 in Boruto before being consumed by Claw Grimes and becoming a self-aware God Tree named Matsuri. Let us take a closer look at this character.
Who Is Moegi in the Naruto Universe?
Moegi was originally a young kunoichi who was part of Team Ebisu in Naruto, along with Konohamaru and Udon. Her personality was similar to Sakura’s as a child, showing both confidence and seriousness.
In particular, Moegi shared a close relationship with Konohamaru. She set him straight during his pranks but was also a loyal friend to him. Moegi’s highlight in the Naruto anime came during the Pain’s Assault arc. When the entire village was in disarray due to the villain’s attacks, she jumped into action to save a little boy.
Later during the prelude to the final war, she helped Konohamaru see the value of staying in the village and protecting their loved ones. Hence, Moegi’s role in the original Naruto series is more of a minor one. Her main standout was her personality as well as her bond with Konohamaru.

Along with her mentorship duties, Moegi engages in various missions of her own. She conducted reconnaissance missions with Konohamaru, fought Suigetsu when her students attempted to find Mitsuki, and trapped Amado when he appeared in the village.
Therefore, Moegi has become a much more mature and reliable figure in Boruto. She is strict, not letting Team 10 take unnecessary risks, but also shows them the necessary affection. Most importantly, she has become much closer to Konohamaru.
While the two of them were initially just close friends, they have clearly evolved into something more. Unfortunately, Moegi’s fate in the series has many fans fearing they will never see this relationship reach its final destination.
Is Moegi Dead in Boruto?
The question of Moegi’s death arises from the latest chapters of the Boruto sequel, Two Blue Vortex. During Code’s attack on Konoha, Moegi was consumed by his Claw Grimes before turning into a smaller God Tree.
This resulted in the creation of Matsuri, a Human God Tree made out of Moegi’s chakra. Matsuri’s appearance is similar to Moegi’s, while her personality is also shaped by it. In particular, she feels a strong attraction toward Konohamaru.
Due to this, the God Trees and Konohamaru’s team could form a temporary truce. However, when the two were conversing with each other, Matsuri made it a strong point that she was a separate person from Moegi. She felt a deep offense when Konohamaru refused her offer to be called “Konohamaru-chan” since Moegi was the only one who did so.
Hence, Moegi’s current status in the manga is extremely ambiguous. She is incapacitated, with her chakra being the central source of Matsuri’s existence. However, the series never confirms that Moegi is conclusively dead.
Boruto also indicates the possibility of turning trees made by Claw Grimes back to normal. Since Sasuke is currently stuck in a similar situation right now, the protagonist promised he would save him. Considering the importance of the new Human God Trees and a budding romance between Konohamaru and Moegi, it wouldn’t make much sense to kill her off-screen.
As a result, Moegi is not dead in Boruto, but she isn’t exactly alive either. She is unable to perform any functions of a living person but still has the chance of being restored to normal.
