Who is Reze in Chainsaw man? Explore the story of one of the series’ most captivating characters, her connection to Denji, and much more.
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s dark shonen manga, Chainsaw Man, is renowned worldwide for its unpredictable storytelling, complex characters, and jaw-dropping twists and revelations. Among its many intriguing characters however, Reze stands out as one of the series’ most impactful figures in Part 1 of the manga.
Ever since she was introduced in the Bomb Girl arc, Reze has been portrayed as a character shrouded in duality. Going from being one of Denji’s potential romantic interests to a major antagonist of an unforgettable arc, Reze had a profound impact on both Denji’s life as well as the overarching narrative. With that said, let us further explore Reze’s character in detail, her connection to Denji, and her broader significance in the narrative of Chainsaw Man.
Who Is Reze in Chainsaw Man?
Tatsuki Fujimoto introduced Reze’s character in the Bomb Girl arc of the Chainsaw Man manga. As the titular main antagonist of the arc, Reze is the Bomb Devil Hybrid from the Soviet Union, sent to Japan seemingly by the Gun Devil, with the mission of stealing Denji, aka Chainsaw Man’s heart.
Reze initially appears as a half-human, half-devil hybrid disguised as a charming and seemingly innocent girl working at a café. At first, it seemed like Reze had developed feelings towards Denji shortly after meeting him. She even tried to give Denji a sense of normality in his life by bringing him to school and teaching him how to swim. Unfortunately, all this turned out to be a façade put on by Reze in order to get closer to Denji and steal his heart for the sake of her mission.
Reze’s Connection to Denji
Denji and Reze have perhaps one of the most emotionally charged relationships in the series. Initially, it seemed like Reze was genuinely fond of Denji and wasn’t afraid to get close and intimate with him. She also expressed a great deal of concern for Denji’s well-being, mainly due to his traumatic life and the fact that he never got the opportunity to attend school as a child.
As such, she attempted to give him somewhat of a functioning and normal life by bringing him to school and even teaching him how to swim. Her kindness and genuine nature resulted in Denji developing strong feelings towards her. However, Reze’s true personality as a manipulative and brutal assassin came out when she attacked Denji and revealed herself as the Gun Devil. Her relationship with Denji and her feelings towards him were all fabricated solely for the purpose of her mission. That said, she did end up showing mercy to Denji in spite of her mission of stealing his heart.
What’s more, Denji even saved her at one point despite her trying to kill him. Although she knew that her relationship with Denji was nothing more than a façade, Reze eventually developed conflicting feelings towards him. She demonstrated this when she missed her train to meet Denji at the café in order to take him up on his offer of running away with him. Unfortunately, Makima and the Angel Devil intercepted her on the way, preventing her from reaching Denji and ended her life.
Reze’s Powers and Abilities
As a Hybrid of the Bomb Devil, Reze possesses immense power and abilities that make her one of the most formidable enemies Denji has faced. Due to the horrific experiments conducted on her by the Russian government for the purpose of creating a super soldier, Reze outclasses Denji in terms of both strength and speed.
Additionally, her hybrid transformation includes being able to transform into a bomb-themed humanoid weapon by pulling the pin in her neck. In her hybrid form, she is highly durable and is able to create explosions at will, which are powerful enough to destroy vehicles, buildings, and roads. As a trained assassin, she is highly skilled in combat. Moreover, her fighting skills are amplified with her explosive powers, which she uses to overwhelm both Public Safety hunters as well as other Devils.
Apart from being able to release explosions from her body and not taking any damage from them, Reze can turn parts of her body into bombs. Lastly, due to being a Hybrid, Reze is effectively immortal and nearly unkillable. This was shown when she returned as a member of Makima’s 5th Special Division after being killed by her at the end of the Bomb Girl arc.
Reze’s Significance in Chainsaw Man
Reze is undoubtedly one of the most impactful characters in Chainsaw Man. While her betrayal further deepened Denji’s emotional scars, her past interactions with him highlighted his longing for genuine human connection. Although she intended to kill Denji to fulfill her mission, her moments of vulnerability and hesitation showcased a more human side to her. It also gave readers a sliver of hope that her feelings for Denji weren’t entirely fake and that deep down, she cared about him to some degree.
Reze bonded with Denji in the first place due to the fact that both of them had a tragic past. Her final moments in the Bomb Girl arc revealed her desire for change, as she missed her train to run away with Denji and start a new life together. However, her dreams of a new and hopeful life were shattered by Makima, who killed and then brainwashed her in order to defeat the Chainsaw Man.
Conclusion
Reze’s character in Chainsaw Man is a testament to the mangaka, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s ability to create characters that are as compelling as they are tragic. Although her role in the overarching narrative is brief, she left a profound impact on both Denji as well as the readers.
