Saint Shepherd Sommers is a World Noble and a member of the God’s Knights who assists Shamrock with his goal in Elbaph. While he wasn’t originally part of their plans, he makes a later appearance when Shamrock decides to take a drastic step to conquer the island. Here is a closer look at this character.
Who Is Saint Sommers in One Piece?
Saint Sommers is an antagonistic figure and loyal member of Shamrock’s God’s Knights. At first glance, Sommers seems to be a relaxed individual who shares a close relationship with the other nobles.
He has casual conversations with Gunko and Killingham, showing excitement at playing a game with them. Additionally, Sommers also seems to be more aware of the situation in Elbaph, since he wondered if his commander had visited King Harald’s grave.
However, apart from these few moments, Sommers is a cruel and sadistic Celestial Dragon at heart. He has a warped view of “love”, believing it lies in hurting one another and in the killing. The intense emotions of parents and children wailing get him more excited, further emphasized by his signature laugh of “Gihaha.”
Saint Sommers’ Strengths and Abilities
In his limited screen time, Sommers has already impressed and repulsed fans with his abilities. He is a huge, older man with a dominating appearance. We never see him engage in confrontations; instead, he relies on his Devil Fruit.
Sommers possesses the Iba Iba no Mi, a Paramecia-type that lets him control thorns. He can attach these to himself and others, make them invisible, and cause painful wounds upon contact. It is also hinted that the potency of the thorns increases based on the strength of emotions a person feels. Due to this, Saul was extremely wounded when trying to save a child.
Saint Sommers also has a mark of the abyss, allowing him to teleport through locations using magic circles. Most importantly, he is a member of the God’s Knights, the elite guard in Sacred Mary Geoise. Due to this, Sommers is likely one of the strongest individuals in the series. He has shown creative application of his thorns, setting traps that can harm even Giants.
When Does Saint Sommers First Appear in One Piece?
Shamrock and Gunko had originally come to Elbaph to recruit Loki and bring the Giants under the control of the World Government. However, when Loki rejected them, the God’s Knights decided to move forward with another plan. This involved kidnapping the children of the Giants and causing disarray within the island.
To achieve this nefarious scheme, they had called other members of their group to assist them. This turned out to be Sommers and Killingham, who made their first appearance in chapter 1140 of the One Piece manga.
Though initially shocked at being summoned to Elbaph, Sommers soon understood his commander’s wishes. Both he and Killingham then put their plan into action.
Saint Sommers’ Role in the Elbaph Arc
Following Sommers’ arrival, Shamrock left the island to go back to Mary Geoise. Hence, it is likely that Sommers, Killingham, and Gunko are the major antagonists for the Elbaph Arc. They are playing some sort of mysterious game to kidnap the Giants’ children and take them back to the Holy Land.
This involves Killingham putting them to sleep, while Sommers places invisible thorns on them and Gunko guides them towards the ships. Therefore, since the children cannot be transported using magic circles, the ‘game’ appears to involve moving them to the port.
In his final scene in the latest chapter, Sommers remarked that their goal had been achieved too smoothly and that they had won too easily. In response, Gunko noted that Luffy’s presence would likely cause trouble.
Thus, Saint Sommers has already established himself as a merciless villain in One Piece. He is actively contributing to the chaos in Elbaph, due to which there is a high chance he will face the Straw Hats in the future.
