Remakes have been on the rise over the past few years, and the year 2024 proved no different. 2024 was a solid year for games, and the remakes followed suit, capitalizing on nostalgia to deliver memorable experiences coated in fresh new paint.
The year featured plenty of remakes, all of which intended to bring forth some classics to modern hardware. Some of these remakes altered the mechanics entirely, while the others stayed true to the original formula. 1) Silent Hill 2
While the original Silent Hill 2 was well received and sold fairly well, it developed a cult status over the years once the series went downhill and was seemingly abandoned. Fast forward to 2024, Silent Hill is a revival tour and the Silent Hill 2 Remake is its poster child. The remake brings everything you love about the original to contemporary hardware and modernizes its gameplay to fit 2024 standards. The game is a joy to play and is one of the best games of the year.
2) Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The original Final Fantasy is a genre-defining title and is one of the greatest RPGs of all time. When rumors first floated of a remake in development, fans were curious as to how Square Enix would remake the all-time classic. Now, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its sequel Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are out, and we can confidently say that Square did the title justice. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth covers the second half of the original Final Fantasy 7 story and is one of the best games of 2024.
3) Persona 3 Reload
Persona 3, while a beloved title, had begun to show its age over the course of several years. Taking notice, Atlus developed Persona 3 Reload, a remake of the original game. Persona 3 Reload takes everything you love about the original and adds to it by incorporating modern mechanics, flashier UI, crisper visuals, and more. The game’s soundtrack is timeless and only adds to the charm.
4) Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was one of the games that flew under the radar when it first released. This mainly was so because of its various design flaws. The game’s remake, however, fixes the original issues and offers a whole new experience.
While the original game was single-player, the remake adds a local co-op mode that lets you experience the game with friends. This shared experience further complements the game’s story of the two brothers, making for a memorable experience.
5) Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
While Mario has always been known for his platformer roots, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door threw the iconic plumber into a turn-based RPG setting. While the original was fairly well received, it was not without its flaws.
The remake, however, adds several quality-of-life changes and enhances the game’s visuals, bringing the game fresh to audiences in 2024. The game is better balanced by an expanded inventory and fast travel system. With the original’s balancing complaints addressed, the remake is the definitive way to experience the game.
