Beginning a new career in Umamusume: Pretty Derby involves choosing two Legacies (parents) for the trainee. These Legacies are veteran umas who pass down their power through Sparks at the beginning of the run and twice during it. One of these Legacies can be borrowed from a friend.
Having your own star uma borrowed by other players as a Legacy for their career earns you Club Points. You can exchange the points for SSR Support Cards, Winner’s Sashes, and other valuable items at the shop. This guide explains how to build your star uma to earn a steady stream of Club Points.

When a trainee completes a career run, she generates Sparks based on her stats, skills, and victories. The power of each Spark is represented by its star rating, ranging between one and three stars.
Train a 3-Star+ Umamusume
Only 3-star+ umas can generate unique skill Sparks. While they offer a weaker version of the unique skills, some of them provide a considerable advantage. The most sought-after unique skills activate in the final leg without restrictive conditions. Due to their powerful and easily activating unique skills, the best Umamusume to build for Legacies are:
- Tokai Teio (Sky-High Teio Step)
- Symboli Rudolf (Behold Thine Emperor’s Divine Might)
- Oguri Cap (Triumphant Pulse)
- Maruzensky (Red Shift/LP1211-M)

The type of Sparks generated and their rating are somewhat randomized, but it is ideal to have a 3-star veteran uma as a Legacy since she will have more Sparks to pass down.
Borrowing Legacies from Friends
When you first start training characters, your own pool of Sparks will be limited. Borrowing a Legacy from a player you follow is crucial at this stage and beyond. Look for and follow top players to borrow their star uma, or find suitable candidates through community forums on platforms like Reddit and Discord. You’re looking for Sparks that will be passed down to your trainee that she can, in turn, pass down to other trainees.
Most Valuable Sparks for a Star Umamusume
When other players evaluate your star uma, they will likely be ranking her based on the following Sparks.
- 3-Star+ Attribute Sparks
- Providing a cumulative 40+ stat boost to Speed, Stamina, or Power through the Sparks of your star uma and her Legacies is a big draw. Six stars worth of Speed Sparks provide +42 Speed.
- Unique Skill Sparks
- Having more than one unique skill Spark is alluring since it is almost guarantees that the skills will become available to trainees during their career.
- Surface Type Sparks
- Having a 3-star Dirt or Turf Spark is valuable since it can help raise the surface aptitude rating to “S” rank.
- Distance Sparks
- Forming a team of umas for PvP often requires increasing a trainee’s aptitude for different distances. 3-star Sparks for Long, Medium, Mile, or Sprint assist with that. They can also increase the distance aptitude to “S” rank.
