In this guide, we shall go over how to beat the Sorrowful Chapelier in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, a boss in the Visages.
Nobody expected a Sekiro-esque parry fest when heading into Clair Obscur Expedition 33, but that is exactly what most of the game’s boss fights turn into. The Sorrowful Chapelier perfectly encapsulates this by throwing a trio of enemies at you, each with their own attack patterns that you need to learn and parry.
The Sorrowful Chapelier is one of the hardest bosses in the game, and depending on who you ask, it may be the hardest boss fight among the three Visage mask bosses. The boss fight consists of the Sorrowful Chapelier himself, accompanied by the Boucheclier and the Moissoneuse. To make matters worse, this trio of enemies is backed by the Visage mask itself, which routinely applies debuffs to you to make the fight harder.

How To Beat Sorrowful Chapelier in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
As stated earlier, the Sorrowful Chapelier is flanked by two other minions. This whole trio is then backed by the large Visage mask at the back. The mask routinely applies the Exhaust debuff, which prevents you from gaining AP and therefore using skills. We recommend being frugal when spending AP with your healer, just in case you need it later. The Cleansing Tint and status-cleansing abilities may also come in clutch if you’re debuffed.
Dealing with the trio itself is fairly manageable if you know which enemy uses which attacks. The Moissoneuse has a three-hit combo that starts with a delay, followed by another delay before the third strike. Account for these delays, parry, and counterattack to dispose of this enemy. The Boucheclier has a standard three-hit sword combo and the ability to counterattack. The counterattack is a shield bash of sorts and has a slight delay for the parry.
The Sorrowful Chapelier has masks floating near its head. It launches these masks straight up before dropping them right at you. You can either parry these attacks or shoot the masks out of the air early to prevent them.

The boss also uses a strike attack where it flies over to you before raising its scythe and slashing. It slashes three times, and there’s a whoosh sound before each attack as a cue to parry. Lastly, the Sorrowful Chapelier uses a slash attack that swipes at the entire party. Dodge or parry the first two and jump over the third to counterattack. Expose the boss’s weakness to Fire and Dark, and counterattack frequently to win.
