Only a week after the release of Dawn of War Definitive Edition, Deep Silver revealed that Dawn of War 4 will be released in 2026. The announcement was followed up by a trailer, pre-alpha footage, and demo access to content creators. As a result, we have a fair idea of the playable factions in Dawn of War 4 and their fundamental mechanics.

All Factions in Dawn of War 4

Adeptus Mechanicus

Making their debut in the Dawn of War series, the Adeptus Mechanicus originates from the Mechanicum headquartered on Mars. They are the industry behind the Imperium, manufacturing everything from lasguns to titans. Beyond their industrial might, the Adeptus Mechanicus have a powerful military in their own right, which hoards some of the most advanced technologies in all the Imperium.

In the game, the Adeptus Mechanicus uses its network to generate strong intelligence. Their battlefield prowess relies on buffing units and structures. They rely on servitor soldiers and Skitarii as frontliners while constructing formidable defensive structures and experimental weaponry.

Space Marines

The protagonists of the original 2004 game, the Blood Ravens, are the iconic Space Marine Chapter behind the Dawn of War series. Led by Captain Cyrus, they are returning to the planet Kronus 200 years after the events of Dawn of War Dark Crusade.

On the battlefield, Space Marines field small numbers of elite units that are stronger than all other factions’ troops on a model-to-model basis. They have access to drop pod deployment to reinforce the frontlines and disrupt enemy formations. Their playstyle revolves around managing a small army as resource rates decrease when the army size increases.

Orks

The green tide of the Orks is once again led to Kronus by Warboss Gorgutz as he unites infighting communities under his banner to assemble an apocalyptic “Waaagh!” The Orks rely on ramshackle technology and questionable tactics to swarm over their enemies with their sheer numbers.

Orks have weak units in the early game, which rely on numbers to overwhelm foes. However, upgrading the technology in the mid and late game unlocks higher-tier units such as the Mega Nobz and Gorkanauts, which serve as force multipliers. The Ork faction rewards a greedy playstyle, capturing territory quickly and harassing enemies to gain an advantage.

Necrons

Kronus is a Necron tomb world that began to awaken after the events of Dawn of War Dark Crusade. Since the Necrons are still waking up 200 years later, we can assume that they canonically weren’t defeated in the war for Kronus at the end of Dark Crusade. Once more, they find themselves besieged, this time by marauding Orks, vengeful Blood Ravens, and the pilfering Mechanicus.

Necrons don’t rely on capturing territory to accumulate resources. Their resource production is tied to base building, similarly to Dark Crusade. The slow-moving Necron infantry is difficult to take down because of their reviving and recall mechanic. Necron vehicles, e.g., Canoptek Doomstalkers and the Monolith, provide long-range fire support with their Gauss weaponry.

Imperial Guard

The Imperial Guard will not be a playable faction in Dawn of War 4 at launch. However, their units are in the game for the campaign, with guardsmen, sentinels, and Leman Russ tanks shoring up the planetary defenses while awaiting Space Marine reinforcements. They may be introduced as a playable faction through DLC. Hopefully, other factions from the series can also be introduced via DLC with the game’s success.
