The Demon Slayer series managed to capture the entire world’s attention when the anime adaptation first debuted. There are plenty of reasons why the series was successful. One of the main reasons for the series’ success is the fact that the studio put out some incredible animation.

Another reason why this show did exceptionally well was due to the pacing of the anime series. There are various elements that affect the pacing of the show, and one of the most important factors is the prevalence of filler episodes. Any show that has good pacing avoids using filler episodes, and Demon Slayer follows this rule.

Ufotable, the animation studio, is quite popular among fans because there are technically no filler episodes. It does a great job of faithfully adapting the source material.

Technically, the anime series does not have any filler episodes at the time of writing. While Ufotable hasn’t particularly created filler episodes, there are a couple of moments from the anime that are not canonical to the manga. All the episodes of the Hashira Training arc have filler moments. There are only 6 manga chapters in this story arc. However, the anime adaptation had a total of 8 episodes.

Almost every episode was dedicated to one Hashira in the organization. Aside from what was covered in the manga, there were plenty of filler elements as well. However, the manner in which Ufotable included these anime-only content was such that it perfectly complimented the source material.

As stated earlier, there are plenty of elements that affect the pacing of the show. The reason why the anime adaptation is doing exceptionally well is due to the fact that the animation studio has thoroughly adapted the source material. The studio not only understood how good a writer Koyoharu Gotouge was but also did justice to the manga by adding flair without disrupting the flow that the manga managed to produce.

That being said, fans were shocked to see that Ufotable decided to use anime-original scenes in the Hashira Training arc. While fans often frown at filler content, this wasn’t the reaction when the episodes were realized. Fans understood that filler content can be included tastefully, and Ufotable put on an absolute master class in this regard.

Another reason why the filler moments worked is due to Ufotable’s understanding of the series. They realized that the show is driven by the characters, and therefore, giving characters the ability to showcase their personalities only added to entertainment value.

Should Demon Slayer Have a Filler Arc Prior to the Final Season?

This is an interesting question because we have to account for two elements in this equation: choice of filler and timing. Based on what was shown in the Hashira Training arc, it is clear that Ufotable is capable of adding filler content that will not disappoint fans. However, things could get tricky should they decide to create a filler arc. Another issue is the timing of it all. Having a filler arc prior to the final season might prove to be extremely counterproductive.

The upcoming trilogy movie will cover the entirety of the Infinity Castle arc. This will not only have some of the most exciting fights in the series, but it will also segue into the final section of the story. With that in mind, it is ideal to work on the canonical material first. Once the anime adaptation is complete, the studio could explore various portions that could be a source of an entertaining filler arc. To answer the question, no, Ufotable should not create filler content prior to the final season.

Potential Filler Arc That Ufotable Can Create Once the Anime Completes Its Run

There are a plethora of interesting characters who didn’t particularly receive enough screen time. One such character is Yoriichi Tsukiguni, the legendary swordsman who nearly killed Muzan all by himself. He was so powerful that the Demon King himself fled the battlefield in fear. The Hanafuda earrings that Tanjiro wore sent shivers down his spine. Such was the effect of this legendary swordsman.

Aside from his feats, the series could also focus on the process that led to the creation of the Sun Breathing Technique. This was the first-ever Breathing Technique that was created, and it resulted in various other forms branching out from this. We could also get a filler arc on Kyojuro Rengoku and how he trained Mitsuri Kanroji as his Tsukugo. There are plenty of areas that Ufotable can explore should they decide to create some anime-original content for fans.
