This guide provides a complete walkthrough of the Poison in the Roots quest in Diablo 4: Season of Witchcraft.
In Diablo 4, Poison in the Roots is a major story quest in season 7 (Season of Witchcraft). The quest requires you to help Gelena and other covens to perform a ritual. The quest becomes available after completing the recurring quest, Whispers in the Wind, which requires you to collect Grim Favors.
While Poison in the Roots can be easily completed in about five minutes, some players may find certain steps of the quest confusing. Here is the complete step-by-step walkthrough of Poison in the Roots quest in Diablo 4.

Poison in the Roots Quest Walkthrough in Diablo 4
The Poison in the Roots quest follows several phases and requires you to perform the following tasks:
- Speak with Gelena and Perform the Ritual
- Invoke the Tree’s Old Name in the Correct Order (Solving the Ritual Puzzle)
- Gather Nangari Blood and Trace the Ritual Circle
- Keep Hollows Out of the Ritual circle
Speak with Gelena and Perform the Ritual
Talk to Gelena near the Tree of Whispers to learn about the rituals. After speaking with her, you need to interact with the Covens’s ritual circle, which can be identified by the footsteps, to begin the ritual.
Invoke the Tree’s Old Name in the Correct Order (Solving the Ritual Puzzle)
Inside the ritual circle, you will be tasked to observe Gelena performing the ritual. After watching Gelena preparing for the ritual, you must invoke the tree’s old name in the correct order. If you are unsure how to determine the proper order, that’s the reason why the task requires you to ‘Observe’ Gelena when preparing the ritual. During the preparation, Gelena, Caidin, and Ouna will say ‘Ayh’, ‘Yew’, and ‘Oun’, which is the right order.
You must select the names in the following order:
- Select “Ayh” – Ritual Brazier at the bottom left near Gelena
- Select “Yew” – Ritual Brazier at the bottom right near Caidin
- Select “Oun” – Ritual Brazier at the top near Ouna
Gather Nangari Blood and Trace the Ritual Circle
After successfully solving the puzzle, gather the vials of Nangari blood by sacrificing the three Nangari inside the ritual circle. Once collected, trace the circle to draw the Nangari Blood to the ritual circle.
Keep Hollows Out of the Ritual Circle
Once you trace the circle with Nangari Blood, various enemies will spawn from all directions. Defend the ritual by preventing them from entering the circle. Fortunately, these enemies can be dealt with easily.
Once all enemies are defeated successfully, leave the ritual circle. Finally, talk to Gelena at the Tree of Whispers to complete the Poison in the Roots quest.
