Caligo, Miasma of Night, is one of the six Nightlord bosses in Elden Ring: Nightreign. You can encounter him on Day 3 of the Fissure in the Fog Expedition after defeating Tricephalos. With a towering stature and the appearance of a bone-white ice dragon, Caligo is certainly an imposing boss to face down. However, once you know his weaknesses and the special attacks to watch out for, Caligo is one of the most exciting bosses to go up against.

Caligo, Miasma of Night, is a dragon that deals heavy AoE frost damage with his special attacks, often covering most of the arena with his icy breath and magic. Defeating him will award you with Murk, randomized Relics, Night of the Miasma Boss Relic, and Trace of Night. You need to collect four Traces of Night in total before you can face the game’s final boss.

Weaknesses of Caligo, Miasma of Night

Caligo has a large health pool but is weak to fire damage. Any anti-dragon damage will also harm the boss considerably, and having frost resistance will significantly reduce incoming damage. Here are some ways you can exploit the weaknesses of Caligo:

  • Attacking Caligo’s head deals bonus damage to him, but is highly risky since most of his attacks are aimed forward.
  • Bring a powerful fire weapon to the battle. Because of Caligo’s weakness to fire, the weapon will chip away at his health faster, and can even stagger him.
  • Activate Shifting Earth: Mountain if possible, as it will give you Improved Frost Resistance and a damage bonus against dragons. The frost resistance buff will reduce the frost and frostbite damage dealt by Caligo. Additionally, the anti-dragon damage bonus from Shifting Earth: Mountain will apply to Caligo.
  • Bleed weapons are particularly effective against Caligo since he tanks a lot of hits and isn’t very mobile. Inflicting Hemorrhage deals massive damage to the dragon since the condition scales with max HP.
    • So, using weapons with both fire damage and bleed is ideal. Some examples include Eleonora’s Poleblade and Rivers of Blood.

Tips To Easily Defeat Caligo, Miasma of Night

Stay behind Caligo in melee

  • When fighting in melee, stay under or behind Caligo to avoid most of his attacks, which are aimed forward.
    • Look out for a tail combo, which he telegraphs by looking back and lifting his tail up. The tail will slam down and sweep. Avoid it by rolling and sprinting away.
  • Attacking Caligo consistently as a spellcaster and ranged specialist is relatively easy since the dragon presents a large target and doesn’t move around that much.
  • After taking damage, Caligo will fly away and land on the opposite side of the arena. He will then perform one of two AoE attacks, which you need to dodge while closing the gap with him.
    • Sweeping Ice Breath: Caligo will slowly sweep the battlefield with a horizontally spreading wave of ice breath. You need to roll diagonally into the ice breath to dodge and avoid its effects.
    • Conical Ice Breath: Caligo breathes frost in an outward spreading cone straight ahead of him. Sprinting to one side and rolling before impact is a simple way of dodging the attack. Getting under the dragon will also save you from the attack.
  • Caligo’s biggest attack is signaled by a giant ice disc appearing in the sky. There are two ways to dodge the attack. The first is to run to the edge of the arena, out from under the disc. The second is to run to the center, where Caligo stands. The second method is preferable since you can get some free hits in. But if you are too far away, book it in the opposite direction.

Second Phase

  • At 50% health, Caligo will enter his second phase and fly into the air. He will fly over you twice with ice crystals raining underneath him. Dodge this elemental bombing run by sprinting perpendicularly out of his flight path.
  • He will then land and blast ice crystals in a wide area ahead of him. The only gaps in the attack are right ahead of him and at 45° angles from his head. You can also try to get under him and avoid the following attacks.
  • The next attack will see the dragon spin 360° and release frost breath in all directions. Back away from the attack or roll through it. Caligo will then create ice blocks around him (that explode after a short delay) and slam down with his tail.
