Escape The Backrooms is an unapologetically terrifying game, and you can either strengthen up and face the fears head-on or cheat a little and bring in a ton of friends to soften the blow. After all, getting enough friends is a good way to make anything less scary.

Escape The Backrooms allows you to bring in up to four friends to face the terror, and if you’re feeling the need for more, things get a little complicated. The game doesn’t allow you to play with more than 4 players, but there is a mod you can use to bypass the limited size of the co-op lobby. We shall discuss the mod in detail below.

As stated earlier, Escape The Backrooms does not allow you to play with more than 4 players, as evident by the 1-4 player mention in the game’s Steam description. You can, however, use a mod to bypass this limit.

The “16p Max Lobby” mod by user Reokin1 allows you to expand the lobby for up to 16 players. Only the lobby leader needs this mod, so one person installing the mod is all that’s necessary. You can install the mod by following the steps below:

  • Install the Interpose Mod Loader from NexusMods.
  • Head to the 16p Max Lobby mod page and download the `16pMod.pak.`
  • Place the file inside “Steam\steamapps\common\EscapeTheBackrooms\EscapeTheBackrooms\Content\Paks\interpose_mods.”
  • If you’re using UE4SS, your steps remain the same, except you place the downloaded file into
  • “Steam\steamapps\common\EscapeTheBackrooms\EscapeTheBackrooms\Content\Paks\LogicMods.”
  • You then have to simply launch the game, and you’ll be able to use the expanded lobby size.

Take note that this mod came out all the way back in January of 2024, during Escape The Backroom’s Early Access phase. Now that 1.0 is out, the mod may not work as intended. Keep this in mind when you go ahead with the mod.
