Ghost of Yotei takes place in 1603 Japan during the Edo Period. Which is 300 years after the events of the first title in the franchise.

After years of anticipation, Sucker Punch Productions finally revealed their latest entry, Ghost of Yotei, in April 2025. This time, instead of a direct sequel, the developers have decided to continue the franchise with another standalone game, set 300 years after the events of its predecessor, with a new protagonist named Atsu.
However, despite a new lead character and a new time period, the title retains the backdrop of Feudal Japan. In this article, we will explore the timeline and setting of Ghost of Yotei in detail.
When Does Ghost of Yotei Take Place?

Andrew Goldfarb, who holds the position of Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch Productions, previously revealed quite a bit about Ghost of Yotei in a PlayStation blog post released back in September 2024. In addition to that, the studio confirmed that Ghost of Yotei will take place 300 years after the events of the previous title.
Ghost of Tsushima was set in 1274 Japan, on the islands of Tsushima and Iki, during the Mongol Invasion. In the sequel, we will explore Atsu’s journey of vengeance three centuries later. Furthermore, players will also get to explore Ezo during the Edo Period. It’s quite an interesting setting, as this particular region did not fall under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603. To describe this harsh and lawless land, the developers stated:
“It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.”
So, it is quite evident that Ghost of Yotei will take us through Atsu’s story as she journeys beyond the jurisdiction of the Shogunate to find and punish the killers of her family roaming the chaotic lands of Ezo.
Where Does Ghost of Yotei Take Place?

As the name suggests, Sucker Punch Productions’ latest title will take place around Mount Yotei, in the lands of Feudal Japan during the Edo Period in 1603. During this time, the Tokugawa Shogunate and 300 powerful daimyo ruled the lands of Japan. However, during the early periods of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s rule, sixty-one daimyo lost their fiefs, and 150,000 samurai became ronin due to not meeting the standards of the Shogun.
Many ronin fled to Ezo—modern-day Hokkaido—after this event to escape Tokugawa rule. As discussed, Ezo was not a part of Japan’s jurisdiction in 1603, although the shogunate eventually seized control of the land. Since Ghost of Yotei also takes place in this region, fans can expect to experience a land full of outlaws, ronin, chaos, and violence in the game.
Additionally, the studio has confirmed that Atsu will travel to Ezo as an underdog seeking vengeance on the killers of her family. Many have also speculated that Atsu might seek refuge in Ezo from the Shogunate. However, since the region did not have a governing body at the time, Atsu venturing there to find the six murderers of her family hiding in Ezo makes more sense.
Conclusion
Moreover, in the trailers, we have seen Atsu wiping blood on a scroll multiple times. This parchment might carry the names of her targets, which supports the latter theory more. Overall, fans will experience Atsu’s journey on a path of vengeance in a harsh land full of criminals, murderers, and ronin in Ghost of Yotei.
