Everything you need to know about all the difficulty settings in Hell Is Us, including the modifiers they offer, and more.

Hell Is Us is marketed as a narrative-driven action-adventure game. And while the game does lean heavily towards a classic action-adventure, it does have some “souls-like” elements as well, particularly when it comes to its combat system. There’s the usual “stamina-based” combat system, complete with dodge rolls and even invincibility frames (i-frames). As such, some players might mistake the game for a traditional souls-like, albeit with a modern skin.
However, Hell Is Us isn’t a souls-like, which is immediately apparent when you first boot up the game. Unlike most souls-likes, where you get a unified difficulty preset, Hell Is Us comes with multiple difficulty settings.
Here’s everything you need to know about Hell Is Us and its difficulty settings. Furthermore, this article will also offer a few tips on how you can turn the game into a “souls-like” experience.

All Difficulty Settings in Hell Is Us

In Hell Is Us, there are a total of 3 difficulty presets – Lenient, Balanced, and Merciless. The game defaults to the Balanced preset, which is essentially the “Normal” difficulty. In this preset, the combat is challenging but not overwhelming. The Lenient preset, on the other hand, is the quintessential “Easy” mode.
In this preset, enemies go down fairly easily (including bosses and elite Haze Hollow Walkers), and you don’t take too much damage from attacks. Lenient is essentially the best way to play Hell Is Us if you’re new to action-adventure games. Lastly, there’s Merciless, which is the “Hard” mode and the difficulty that’s most appropriate for the experience.
In the Merciless preset, enemies feel like an actual threat, and the game forces you to make use of all your resources. Furthermore, if you choose Merciless at the start of the game, it enables the Death Penalty by default. The Death Penalty is essentially the souls-like equivalent preset, where, upon death, enemies that aren’t bosses will respawn.
If you’re experienced with souls-like games and are looking for a challenge, Merciless is the best option to pick. Furthermore, given how the story shapes up the Hollow Walkers as a force to be reckoned with, Merciless truly makes you feel the threat of these otherworldly forces.
Here’s a rundown of all the difficulty settings in Hell Is Us:
- Lenient: Easy difficulty for players who aren’t experienced with action games.
- Balanced: A balanced difficulty, best for players who want to enjoy the story without compromising on combat challenge.
- Merciless: The hard difficulty for veterans of action RPGs and souls-like games.
