Hell Is Us is easily one of 2025’s most visually impressive games, at least when it comes to the action-adventure genre. The game employs a photorealistic art style powered by Unreal Engine 5. Surprisingly enough, Hell Is Us is among the very few Unreal Engine 5 games that don’t rely on ray tracing for lighting.

Instead, the game features a baked-in lighting solution as well as global illumination. While you still have the option to use ray tracing, it’s not necessary, especially on consoles. On PS5, Hell Is Us offers two graphics modes to choose from. However, outside of resolution and frame rate targets, both modes look almost identical, even on a bigger screen.

Here’s everything you need to know about Hell Is Us’ graphics modes on the PS5, and how they perform during gameplay.

Hell Is Us has two graphics modes on PS5 – Quality and Performance. As usual, Quality mode targets a higher resolution while locking the game down to 30fps. While the frame rate might seem low for an action game, the 30fps in Quality mode is properly frame-paced. As such, it feels very smooth in motion, especially on a TV.

On a VRR-capable monitor, however, the 30fps cap can feel a bit jarring as the game doesn’t have a VRR toggle. This is where the Performance modes come into play. The Performance mode targets a steady 60fps while reducing the game’s internal resolution. However, the game does output at 4K in both graphics modes.

In Quality mode, the internal resolution seems to be between 4K and 1440p, which makes the image look quite crisp. On the other hand, in Performance mode, the internal resolution of the game is dropped to 1080p and then upscaled to 4K. The game seems to be using FSR2 to upscale the image.

However, despite the older FSR2 tech, the resolution of the output image is quite crisp in Performance mode. The only outliers to this are finer details like hair, grass, or ground textures.

Here’s a rundown of the graphics modes in Hell Is Us:

  • Quality Mode: 1440p (upscaled to 4K) at 30fps.
  • Performance Mode: 1080p (upscaled to 4K) at 60fps.

Is Performance Mode Worth Using in Hell Is Us?

Absolutely. The Performance mode is quite good in Hell Is Us. Unlike some of the earlier UE5 games, Hell Is Us doesn’t have any major stuttering issues on the PS5. And even without a VRR mode, the game looks quite good in motion. The only downside to using Performance mode is the lower internal resolution, which can look a bit choppy on bigger television screens.
