Before you play Hollow Knight Silksong, you might want to get a recap of the story of the original game around the Silent Knight’s journey.

Hollow Knight Silksong naysayers have finally been denied, as the game has confirmed its release for September 4, 2025. However, before you jump on the hype train, you may want a reminder of the complete story of the first Hollow Knight.
Although Silksong is likely going to be a mostly standalone story, the main character, Hornet, first appears as a side character in the prequel. Therefore, if you wish to know more about her origins, you will want to play the original game first. However, if you have forgotten the story or do not want to go through the entire game, then this story recap will cover everything important that takes place in the first Hollow Knight.
(Disclaimer: Naturally, there will be major story spoilers for Hollow Knight going forward.)

Hollow Knight Story Recap: The Knight’s Journey From Start To Finish

Background of the World
The story is set in the fictional setting of Hallownest, which is a kingdom inhabited by insects. These insects used to worship a god-like entity called the Radiance. However, this changed upon the arrival of the Pale King, another similar entity.
With the arrival of the Pale King, the insects found a new entity to worship. However, the Radiance did not wish to be forgotten so easily. This led to the Radiance infecting the minds of the insects of Hallownest with a form of sickness that caused them to revert to their primal instincts.
The Pale King, wishing to free its subjects, decided to use the power of the Abyss (the Radiance’s natural enemy). For this purpose, the King made multiple vessels using the Abyss, which, being empty in nature, could seal the Radiance inside themselves.
This is how the Silent Knight came into being, alongside the titular Hollow Knight. The Hollow Knight was the first successful vessel created and was thus used to seal away the Radiance. Nevertheless, due to some time spent with the Pale King, the vessel was no longer empty. This allowed the Radiance to not get fully sealed and continue its plague.
This is where the main story starts.

Start of the Game

The game starts with you taking control of the Silent Knight as it arrives at Dirtmouth. From here, the Knight proceeds to battle through fierce creatures and obstacles on their journey through Hallownest. The main purpose is to fulfill the mission of the Pale King and seal away the Radiance permanently.
Along this journey, the Knight encounters Hornet, the protagonist of Silksong. Hornet is later revealed to be the illegitimate daughter of the Pale King. Hornet originally acts as a boss, mistaking us for an enemy. However, she later becomes a reliable ally on your quest.

Main Objective of the Game

The main purpose of your journey is to break the Seals placed upon the Hollow Knight, so that you may battle the Radiance. There are three Seals you must break in order to reach the Hollow Knight. The majority of the game is spent trying to reach these Seals, alongside collecting charms and improving your Nail.
Once you have broken all three Seals, you can head over to fight the Hollow Knight. From here, the game has many branching endings, depending on your paths and decisions.

Ending

The base game has three endings. Each ending requires you to make certain decisions before or after the fight against The Hollow Knight. Here is every ending explained:
The Hollow Knight Ending: This ending is the ending that players get if they have not achieved the conditions for any other ending. Once you defeat the Hollow Knight, the protagonist seals away the Radiance (or the Infection) within themselves and takes the place of the original Vessel (that being the Hollow Knight).
The other two endings occur if you have acquired the Voidheart before facing the Hollow Knight. If you have this item with you, then Hornet will assist you in battle against the original Vessel. Hornet will stun the Hollow Knight for a brief moment, which allows you to choose which ending you want.
Sealed Siblings: If you choose to defeat the Hollow Knight or simply take too long to enter its mind, then this ending plays out. Both The Silent Knight and Hornet will be sealed away. This ending is likely not canon to Silksong. This is because Hornet gets sealed alongside the Silent Knight, which would prevent her from appearing in the sequel game.
Dream No More: If you enter the Hollow Knight’s mind using the Dream Nail, then you can fight the Radiance. After defeating this boss, the Abyss swallows the Radiance whole and purges the Infection from Hallownest. Although Team Cherry has said that all the endings are equally canon, this one flows seamlessly into Silksong.
That was the complete Story Recap for Hollow Knight Silksong, which detailed the “Silent” Knight’s journey in its entirety.
