Twitch streamer Jason Thor Hall, also known as “Pirate Software,” is currently a trending streamer in the content creator scene. Hall was born on July 17, 1987, which makes him 37 years old at the time of writing (January 2025). The streamer founded an American indie game studio called Pirate Software (which also explains his Twitch name). On Twitch, he has over 1.3 million followers, along with a further 2.66 million subscribers on YouTube.

For those wondering, his studio has created games like Champions of Breakfast, Heartbound, Heartbound ARG, Blockgame, and Kill the Moon. The company, of course, has no relation to piracy. It was a wordplay that Jason revealed was suggested by a friend. The streamer has been streaming since 2017.

What Is Pirate Software’s Controversy Involving Asmongold?

Pirate Software is currently facing a string of accusations and controversy involving other streamers. The first major controversy arose after a collaboration with fellow streamer Zack “Asmongold.” Known as a polarizing figure in the streaming community, Asmongold has often faced criticism for his outspoken opinions and controversial takes.

Jason, however, has fired back at the critics, stating that the backlash is unwarranted. He emphasized that if given the chance to collaborate with Asmongold again, he would not hesitate to do so. He said:

“I have over 500 hours in the game and refuted the video made by the other creator. As Asmon’s channel was the flashpoint for this it makes sense to talk to him about the situation and clear the air of bullshit. We did this live on Twitch the same day it happened.”

He added:

“If you want to cancel me for talking to him that’s fine but I would do this again given the chance. The developers don’t deserve unwarranted hate.”

Why Is Pirate Sofware Getting Criticism for His Role in OnlyFangs?

The second controversy he found himself involved in stemmed from his role in OnlyFangs, a WoW Hardcore guild created by OTK member and Twitch streamer Chance “Sodapoppin.” The controversy arose when he was accused of allegedly running away or “roaching out” from mobs in the server.

“Roaching out” refers to when a player adopts a passive approach to gameplay. In this instance, as many in the streaming community pointed out, Pirate Software’s passive tactics led to the death of two level 60 characters in the guild, further fueling the controversy surrounding his involvement in OnlyFangs.

Jason has also responded to the criticism. He admitted that he is not the best gamer but condemned those sending death threats and offering unfair criticism, calling such behavior unacceptable:

“To pin that on a single person is absurd at best and if you’re calling for death and cancellation over it you’re too invested in this content in a very unhealthy way. If you’re a creator engaging in this kind of behavior then eventually your content wave will end but the relationships you’ve sullied will be permanent. Hope it was worth it for you.”
