Sea of Thieves throws you into a massive open world, letting you run riot over the seas in search of gold and glory. You undertake quests, hunt for treasure, and fight several other pirates along the way. The game’s map is massive, with most of it consisting of empty waters, faithfully recreating the joys (and terrors) of navigating the vast oceans. However, the vastness of the ocean can often lead to frustrations due to long travel times.

Navigating from one island to the other can consume a lot of time and keep you away from the action. Thankfully, Sea of Thieves lets you adjust and change your ship’s speed, letting you go from point to point much faster. Those seeking to truly soak in the joys of the ocean can also opt to take it slow. There is a speed suited for almost everyone, letting you enjoy the game to its fullest.

If you’re tired of taking forever to get anywhere in the game and want to change your ship’s speed, read along to understand the mechanics. In this guide, we will go over how to change your ship’s speed in Sea of Thieves.

To change the ship’s speed, you first need to understand what determines your it. The ship moves with the help of the sails, which is a giant cloth that hangs from the pole in the center. The wind then blows and pushes this cloth, which in turn helps the ship move.

Now, to increase your ship speed, the first thing you need to do is to set your sails all the way down. Next, you need to align your sails with the direction of the wind. Once the wind hits the entirety of the sails at the right angle, your ship moves at its fastest. Take note that the speed of the wind also determines the speed of your ship, so you are often at the mercy of nature itself.

If you wish to go slow, you can simply adjust the angle of the sail to another direction where the wind does not get all of it. You can also raise the sails by a bit to the same effect. If you wish to halt completely, raise your sails all the way up. Keep practicing, and you will understand the mechanics.
