Cruel Sting is a unique sword custom-made for Drow, and you can claim it early on in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
Cruel Sting
In Baldur’s Gate 3 the Cruel Sting is a Longsword with perks that make it best suited to be wielded by a Drow. Perhaps even Minthara, if you laid the ground for recruiting her back in Act 1. Sting the Helpless is a bonus that works only when a Drow is wielding this sword. It will deal additional Poison damage against Restrained targets.
Moveover, the sword gives you an easy way to cause your enemies to have this condition. You’ll be able to cast Ensnaring Strands once per Short Rest. This spell conjures thick sticky webbing that possibly Enwebs your target(s). If successful, you will then be able to do more damage with this sword. Additionally, attack rolls against the creature have Advantage, while the creature’s Attack Rolls and Dexterity Saving throws are rolled with Disadvantage.

How to Get Cruel Sting in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can get Cruel Sting in Baldur’s Gate 3 by progressing through the game to the beginning of Act 2, and crossing paths with a Drider named Kar’niss who is in service of the Absolute. Moreover, you’ll have to defeat and kill him in order to get the sword. There are two ways to encounter Kar’niss in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands and find the Last Light Inn first. You can choose to travel with a group of Harpers to an ambush site where they are going to attack Kar’niss and the group he is leading through the Shadow.
- Enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands via the Mountain Pass and Rosymorn Monastery Trail. A group of Absolute followers will be waiting for Minthara, but can be convinced you’re with them too. Use the Spider’s Lyre to summon the Drider and during the Harper ambush you can choose to turn on Kar’niss.
Fight with Kar’niss
The fight with Kar’niss and the other Absolute followers isn’t super difficult. Kar’niss is obviously the enemy with the most HP, but if you Examine him you’ll see that he has no resistances. He does have the annoying ability to cast Sanctuary on himself, but this can be bypassed by casting area-of-effect spells that target him. Fireball if you have a spellcaster at Level 5 for higher is nice, or Ice Storm and Call Lightning can work, as well.
After you defeat the whole group, go back to Kar’niss body and click to loot him. You’ll find the Moonlantern he was carrying (which you can use to grants yourself and your party save passage through the Shadow-Cursed Lands). Additionally, you’ll finally be able to take Cruel Sting for your own!
