All the iPhone 17 models; the standard one, the Air, and both the Pros, now feature a new Center Stage front camera. It uses a new, larger square sensor, which allows for higher-resolution photos, 18-megapixel photos in both portrait and landscape orientations, without the need to rotate the phone. Then comes AI, which automatically expands the field of view when more people enter the frame. The larger sensor also provides advanced video stabilization, similar to the Action Mode on the rear cameras.

The iPhone 17 and the new iPhone 17 Air use a 48-megapixel dual-fusion camera system. This setup combines a primary camera and an optical 2x telephoto into a single unit. The iPhone 17 also adds a new 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra-Wide camera, improving the image quality by up to 4x what the iPhone 16’s ultra-wide lens offered.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max introduce the most powerful and innovative camera system ever. For starters, the entire Apple event was reportedly shot on the Pro, and for the first time, all three rear cameras feature 48-megapixel Fusion cameras.

The system includes

  • An updated 48MP main camera
  • An updated 48MP ultra-wide camera
  • An all-new 48MP Fusion telephoto camera.

The new design also pushes telephoto capabilities to the next level. According to Apple, the company’s Tetra Prism design features a 56% larger sensor size. It offers a 4x optical zoom at 100mm and an 8x optical zoom at 200mm, the longest ever in an iPhone. The digital zoom now reaches up to 40x. For seasoned professionals, the Pro models add support for ProRes RAW capture, helping them take videography to the next level.

Moving Forward

While on paper, these improvements look very impressive. It’s best to wait for reviews and observe how the product performs and then make an informed purchasing decision. If you already have an existing iPhone 13 or beyond, it’s still plenty capable.
