Lies of P Overture is incredibly challenging, more so than the base game itself. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, especially if you’ve played any other souls-like before it. Much like the FromSoftware classics or modern titles in the souls-like RPG genre, Overture takes everything that worked in Lies of P and cranks it up to eleven. And much like any other souls-like DLC, Overture is a massive jump in difficulty compared to the base game.

For reference, the first major boss in the DLC, Markiona, is comparable to Laxasia, Simon Manus, or the Nameless Puppet from the base game. Essentially, the entire DLC is scaled to endgame, and as such, is equally as challenging.

However, to offset the game’s challenge, developer Round 8 Studios has added new difficulty options to the game. Difficulty presets aren’t usually a thing in souls-like. However, their inclusion in Overture makes complete sense, due to the game’s reliance on cinematic storytelling. Here’s everything you need to know about the difficulty options in Lies of P Overture.

With the latest update and Overture, Round 8 Studios has added 3 difficulty presets in Lies of P – Butterfly’s Guidance, Awakened Puppet, and Legendary Stalker. It should be noted that these presets are available to all players, regardless of it they purchase Overture or not. The difficulties are fairly simple, they basically represent – Very Easy, Easy, and Normal (Default).

At the start of a playthrough, the game will let you choose the difficulty you want to start with. However, you can freely change difficulty during gameplay. What’s best is that the game does not require a checkpoint reset or restart to apply the change in difficulty. Also, there’s no penalty for lowering the difficulty.

Regardless of your chosen difficulty preset, you can unlock all the achievements/trophies in the game. That said, due to how the presets are named, it can be a bit confusing to figure out their meaning. To help with that, here’s a breakdown of the difficulty presets:

Butterfly’s Guidance

The Very Easy preset, which is intended for players who want to experience the story without having to worry too much about the combat. Parrying and dodging are still needed, but you aren’t punished heavily for failing to avoid enemy attacks. Bosses have lower total HP and have longer cooldowns between combos.

Awakened Puppet

The Easy preset which is intended for players who are new to action games. Perfect parrying and dodging attacks are incentivized, but not necessary. Boss HP is reduced, but they retain the aggression from the default difficulty preset.

Legendary Stalker

The default preset, which is also the intended difficulty for the game. The Legendary Stalker preset is the quintessential “souls-like” difficulty, which is manageable in standard New Game but can be quite challenging in New Game+ cycles.

If you’re experienced with Lies of P’s gameplay loop and don’t mind a challenge, it’s best to stick with Legendary Stalker difficulty. While it certainly is difficult, Legendary Stalker is very much manageable, especially if you can time your parries perfectly. Furthermore, the game offers plenty of ways to easily offset the difficulty in the game with weapon builds, stats, and more.

If you want an easier time with Lies of P and even Overture, we highly recommend investing in an Advance or Technique build. However, if you find the base game or Overture too difficult, you can always knock it down to Awakened Puppet or Butterfly’s Guidance presets.

During our testing, we did not find too many differences between Awakened Puppet and Butterfly’s Guidance presets. However, both these modes were significantly easier than Legendary Stalker, at least on a standard New Game. On NG+5, even the Butterfly’s Guidance was quite challenging due to how the game scales difficulty across NG+ cycles.
