Learn how to use Clefairy in the Pokemon VGC format based on Mao Harada’s 2025 Pokemon World Championship build.

Clefairy has always had a role in VGC, unlike its evolution, Clefable, which has dominated in Singles. Naturally, Clefairy also appeared at the 2025 Pokemon World Championships. Its highest placement was on Mao Harada’s Top 8 team, which finished eighth overall after losing to eventual winner Giovanni Cishcke.
In this article, we will take a look at the build for Mao Harada’s Clefairy and how you should use it in the VGC format.
What Is the Build of Mao Harada’s Clefairy?

The main reason to use Clefairy in VGC is its unique ability, Friend Guard. This ability reduces the damage Clefairy’s allies take by 25%, not 75%. Also, as Clefairy is not a fully evolved Pokemon, Mao gave it an Eviolite. The Eviolite is a held item that boosts the Defense and Special Defense of the Pokemon that holds it by 50% as long as it can evolve further. This allows Clefairy to have enough bulk to survive attacks from powerful Restricted Legendaries.
Additionally, while Fairy-type is generally a great type, Mao went with a Ground Tera type. This would give it an immunity to powerful Electric-type moves like Miradon‘s Electro Drift or Raging Bolt‘s Thunderclap.
Moves Used by Mao Harada’s Clefairy
The Clefairy line has a vast movepool, including some of the best support moves in the game. Mao went with no attacking moves, choosing to focus on Clefairy’s support capabilities. Its moveset included Follow Me for redirection, Helping Hand to give an ally a damage boost, Encore to lock the opponent into a single move, and Protect to protect itself if targeted.
Which Pokemon Is Clefairy Good Against?
Clefairy isn’t meant to attack and works as support for more offensively inclined teammates. So, it is not really “good” against any Pokemon.
Common Partners for Clefairy

- Calyrex Shadow Rider: Calyrex Shadow Rider, like the one on Mao’s team, benefits a lot from Clefairy’s presence. Friend Guard gives it more bulk, Helping Hand boosts its Astral Barrage, and Follow Me redirects potential KOs away from it.
