Maps are a typical feature of open-world RPGs, but does the more streamlined game of South of Midnight have a map location?

In the world of video games, maps are often the cornerstone of navigation, exploration, and player immersion. They help guide adventurers through vast landscapes, intricate cities, and hidden corners of virtual realms. South of Midnight, a title that’s been capturing the attention of gamers with its unique setting and engaging gameplay, raises an important question: does it offer a map feature to assist players in their exploration? This article delves into the presence (or absence) of such a feature in the game, examining how it impacts the player’s experience, navigation, and overall sense of adventure.
Where Is the Map in South of Midnight?
Unfortunately, the game South of Midnight does not have a map feature to help you keep track of your location. Pressing the M key on your keyboard (if on PC) does nothing. Furthermore, if you check the list of keybinds, there is not a keybind listed for a map anywhere.
Most sprawling, open-world games have maps and mini-maps as core features so that players can keep track of where they have been. Moreover, it helps when using guides to find gear, weapons, and collectibles.
In South of Midnight, you do not have to worry about some of these things. All weapons and equipment are given to you automatically during the course of the game. There are three main weapon/utility items in SoM, including hooks, a spindle, and distaff. All three have unique abilities, and you’ll get them one by one during the early chapters of the game.
Furthermore, gear and armor does not feature in South of Midnight at all. You will get a couple of cosmetic costume changes at significant points in the story, but these do not impact any defensive statistics.
How to Find Collectibles in South of Midnight

Without a map, finding collectibles such as floofs, readables, tin flips, and health filaments will be much more challenging. South of Midnight is very linear and the narrative will keep you moving forward. However, there are still plenty of places the developers have hidden these special items.
Therefore, you’ll need to keep an eye out for when a new path branches off, or for other secret areas. Additionally, there are some larger open spaces along the way, and you’ll have to conduct a through search to find everything. Here are some tips and tricks we recommend for finding collectibles in South of Midnight:
- Use the Guiding Strand often. When you come to a fork in the path, the Guiding Strand will show you the way you’re ‘supposed’ to go. Consequently, you know which path might hide a collectible or two. Take that patch first, and then come back to continue the main journey.
- Check the chapter list to see your collectible count. The game will tell you how many floofs, readables, and health filaments you have found.
- In larger open spaces, or after fighting a group of Haints, you’ll have to be more methodical. It’s easy to get turned around during a fight. After the stigma and cursed branches fade away, try to reorient yourself and find where you first came in at. Then, use the Guiding Strand to see where you need to go. Then, are there any other paths or hidden spaces anywhere else?
- Don’t forget to send Crouton into any small burrow you can find. If it’s not something tied to game progression, there is bound to be a floof collectible in there.
