It demands mastery of stealth, adaptation, and the intricate systems that made the original a masterpiece. The jungle is a living, reactive entity, and your success depends on understanding how it works. This guide will break down the essential combat and stealth fundamentals you need to become the ultimate predator. From leveraging your camouflage to executing perfect Close Quarters Combat (CQC) techniques.

How Close Quarters Combat Works
To use Close Quarters Combat, you just have to press the CQC button near an enemy. The button prompt might depend on whether you are using Legacy or Modern controls. CQC is your versatile tool for non-lethal takedowns and interrogations. This comes into play when Snake is dealing with his enemies up close and personal.
It includes the multiple ways you can interact during the CQC state. Firstly, Snake can only perform CQC while holding smaller weapons. If he is holding a rifle or a bigger weapon, then he will only perform a weak melee attack. You can identify which guns are compatible with CQC by looking at the weapon icon. Only CQCs performed by the compatible weapons will knock out enemies.
By pressing and holding the CQC button, you can grab an enemy, putting them in a hold. While holding the enemy, you have multiple options. You can slit their throat for an instant kill, interrogate them, or gently knock them out. Interrogating them and then putting them to sleep is the best option in most situations. The interrogated enemies might share important intel, such as item locations or radio frequencies.
Enemy Awareness

Enemies operate on a three-way awareness spectrum, which is Undetected, Caution, and Alert. Understanding their status is key to staying stealthy in MGS. In most of the missions, enemies start off with Undetected awareness. This means that the enemies aren’t aware of your presence. But once they hear a noise or find a suspicious item, their awareness status switches to the Caution state. This is where they will actively start investigating and patrolling. Finally, when enemies spot you, they will open fire and call for backup, triggering the Alert phase.
How To Use Camouflage

Your survival depends on blending in. The Camo Index percentage at the bottom of your screen measures how well you match your immediate surroundings. Changing your camouflage pattern frequently helps you to stay sneaky. Lying in grass requires a different pattern than pressing against a concrete wall or wading through water. Moreover, your posture also dictates your index.
Crawling offers the best concealment, followed by crouching. Standing upright makes you highly visible. Always glance at your Camo Index. A higher percentage means enemies will have a much harder time spotting you.
