Metaphor: ReFantazio Gameplay

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a turn-based JRPG that also makes use of real-time combat elements. As with many JRPGs, the combat takes place within one of the game’s numerous dungeons. The non-combat encounters, meanwhile, take place in towns and cities. You have the freedom to travel between dungeons and cities as per your own desire.

The game’s combat makes use of the ‘press turn’ system, previously used in the Shin Megami Tensei games. This system allows you to perform more actions through exploiting enemy weaknesses. Furthermore, enemy weaknesses are based around an elemental system, and strategic use of different elements according to the scenario is crucial for victory.

Another feature in common with the traditional JRPG is a party and job system. As you progress through the main story, you will get to meet and recruit six steadfast allies who will assist you in combat.

Although the party members have their own specialties, you can also have them take on a different role via the job system, allowing you to assign different jobs by the name of ‘Archetypes’ to each character. Each Archetype has its own style of combat and elemental affinity. Some are support-based, while others deal physical or elemental damage.

Fans of the Persona series will be glad to know that the social link feature makes a return in Metaphor: ReFantazio. You can meet friends and forge bonds with a large number of characters all over the game. Although not all of these characters join your party, they do give benefits without exception. These benefits make your life easier both inside and outside of combat and also unlock new Archetypes for you to use.
