Chien-Pao is a Dark/Ice type from Generation IX known for being a fast physical attacker. This has made it a useful choice in the Pokemon VGC format, with its highest placement at 2025 Worlds being on Montana Mott’s Top 4 team. What Is the Build of Montana Mott’s Chien-Pao?
Chien-Pao’s best stats are its Speed (135) and Attack (120). Its Attack gets a further boost from its ability Sword of Ruin, which lowers the Defense stats of all other Pokemon on the field. It is frail, but Montana chose to give it a Tera Poison typing for a more defensive option.
Finally, he gave his Chien-Pao an Assault Vest, which boosts its Special Defense at the cost of only being able to use attacking moves.
Moves Used by Montana Mott’s Chien-Pao
Montana went with Ice Spinner as his Chien-Pao’s physical Ice STAB, which has the secondary effect of removing any Terrains on the field. As for Dark STAB, he went with Sucker Punch for the +2 priority, letting him take out weakened opponents faster. The third move was the Super Fang-esque Ruination, which cuts the target’s current HP in half, ignoring any type matchups.
Finally, he went with Icy Wind as his fourth move. While the move is weak due to Chien-Pao’s lower Special Attack stat of 90, it provides a valuable form of speed control.
Which Pokemon Is Chien-Pao Good Against?
As a fast Dark/Ice type, Chien-Pao threatens Restricted Legendaries like Miraidon, Calyrex Shadow Rider, and Lunala. It’s also great at dealing with common non-Restricted Pokemon like Rillaboom and Amoonguss.
Common Partners for Chien-Pao
- Zamazenta Crowned: Zamazenta Crowned is a threat to Chien-Pao, but also acts as a valuable ally. The mascot of Pokemon Shield can threaten not only Incineroar and Grimmsnarl, but opposing Zamazenta Crowned as well.
- Urshifu Rapid Strike: Urshifu loves the defense drop from Swords of Ruin, as this lets it do more damage with its signature move Surging Strikes.
- Miraidon: Chien-Pao takes out Amoonguss and Rillaboom, which Miraidon struggles to damage. In return, Miraidon takes out Pokemon like Ho-Oh, which causes issues for Chien-Pao.
