Dragonite has been an interesting pick for the VGC format. While it had decent usage early on, by the time the 2025 World Championships had arrived, its usage had dropped to around 1%. However, it did see some use at Worlds with two Top 8 placements. One of those ended up being on Montana Mott’s Top 4 team. So in this guide, we will be looking at the best way to use Dragonite in VGC based on Montana Mott’s build.

What Is the Build of Montana Mott’s Dragonite?

One of the reasons why Dragonite was an option in previous regulations was its access to the +2 priority move Extreme Speed. By Terastallizing into a Normal type, Dragonite could spam an 80 base power STAB priority move repeatedly. Montana also gave it the Choice Band item, which boosts Attack at the cost of only using a single move. Seeing as Dragonite’s main role is to spam Extreme Speed, this isn’t an issue. Another notable aspect worth mentioning was the use of Inner Focus as a superior ability to Multiscale.

Multiscale reduces the damage taken by a super effective attack as long as the Pokemon is at full HP. This makes it a better choice for Dragonite in Singles. However, new mechanic changes in Generation VIII led to Pokemon with Inner Focus no longer being affected by Intimidate, in addition to its usual flinch blocking capabilities. This makes a Dragonite with Inner Focus a very good check to opposing Incineroar.

Moves Used by Montana Mott’s Dragonite

Besides Extreme Speed, Montana’s Dragonite had Aqua Jet as another priority option. It also had Low Kick to deal massive damage to Pokemon with high weight. Finally, as a last resort nuke Dragonite had a powerful Dragon STAB Outrage. However, this requires a bit of patience as Outrage would lock Dragonite in for 2-3 turns and will randomly target either opponent if both are on the field. So the best time to use the move is when the opponent has only one Pokemon left (and it isn’t a Fairy or Steel-type).

Which Pokemon Is Dragonite Good Against?

Dragonite is meant to deal neutral damage with Extreme Speed and KO weakened opponents that aren’t Ghost-types (which are immune to Normal-types), Steel-types, or Rock-types (which resist Normal-types). However, as mentioned earlier, it does well against Fake Out users like Incineroar and Rillaboom, as they basically waste a turn if they attack Dragonite. If it Terastallizes into a Normal-type its immune to Ghost STAB from Calyrex Shadow Rider, Flutter Mane, and Lunala, though it will struggle to hit them back.
