A law signed by United States (US) President Joe Biden could force a ban on TikTok by January 19, 2025. The US government has wanted to ban TikTok since 2023 over security concerns, leaving millions of American users concerned. TikToker James “MrBeast” Donaldson tweeted on January 14, 2025, that he would buy TikTok to stop the ban.

A few hours after his original tweet, he said on X that he had multiple billionaires reach out to him. He claimed that he is talking to interested parties to see if they can “pull this off,” implying he is serious about buying the social media app.

The app will continue to be usable for the 170 million TikTok users in the US, but it will stop working over time without updates. New users will not be able to download the app after January 19, 2025, if the ban goes live.

Can MrBeast Stop TikTok From Being Banned?

Chinese technology company ByteDance owns TikTok, and it has refused to sell its American side of the business. Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team owner Frank McCourt previously attempted to purchase the app, but ByteDance declined.

McCourt said that the US Supreme Court needs to uphold the law requiring TikTok’s divestment for a sale to happen. If the ban goes live, ByteDance may sell its US division to an American business.

McCourt is not the only businessman interested in purchasing the app. With MrBeast showing interest publicly in the billionaires allegedly talking to him about a business deal, the YouTuber may be able to stop the ban.

President Joe Biden signed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell the app to a US company by January 19, 2025. If MrBeast successfully negotiates a deal, his audience could hear about it very soon.

Why Is TikTok Getting Banned in the US?

US officials are concerned about TikTok sharing user data with Chinese authorities. Government officials may withhold the ban if the app agrees to keep user data within the US and not share it with Chinese authorities.

President-elect Donald Trump wanted to ban the app during his previous term from 2017 to 2021. His successor, Joe Biden, also shared the same sentiments, but Trump changed his opinion on the app during the recent presidential elections. Trump attributed his success in the elections to TikTok.

In a recent interview with NewsMax, the upcoming president said:

“I’m not opposed to TikTok. You know, let’s see what happens. I really have to wait to see what happens at the Supreme Court because nobody knows what they can do. Let’s see what they have to say, but I had a very good experience with TikTok.”

Trump will take office on January 20, 2025, and users are hoping for him to intervene. Alternatively, if MrBeast or another American business acquires the US division of the app, they could protect it from the ban.
