Singular 9, a Hong Kong-based studio, has announced the crowdfunding of its first independent handheld, the Ink Console, set to launch on 1st March. The Ink Console is the first handheld console that takes the technology from an e-ink reader screen and combines it with story-telling style choice-based games.

With this style of nostalgia-driven text-adventure role-playing games making a comeback in the gaming industry, this console brings nostalgia from classic games like the 1920s Zork I to a newer audience who are unfamiliar with these games. Let’s take a look at what this console has to offer.

The retro console features a monochrome 7.5-inch, 800-by-480 E-ink screen designed exclusively for text-based games. Additionally, players will be able to navigate through choose-your-own-adventure-type game titles using the analog joystick and a button to give input for the desired choices at each step. Furthermore, the console offers a dual-core ESP32 microprocessor, 4MB flash memory, 8MB PSRAM, and 520KB SRAM.

The console will also include an SD card reader, USB-C charging port, stereo audio output, and a 3.5mm jack. It will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity options. To power everything, it has a 5,000 mAh battery, which can last for a very long time, as it only displays black and white colors, which are not graphics intensive.

The first few titles are developed by the Singular 9 studio themselves. Meanwhile, the Ink Console website has nine games available for the console, which can be purchased digitally or as a physical copy, which can be inserted into the console’s SD card slot.

The titles include Zork V, a remake of the classic Zork I, Breath, Rand Saga, and much more. Moreover, the stories cover a wide range of genres, from thrilling expeditions and deep-sea adventures to immersive sci-fi narratives and fantasy epics.

The Ink Console is open-source, thanks to its Software Development Kit, which allows other studios and users to make games for the console. As a result, developers have the freedom to bring new, interesting stories to life with an immersive interface.

The Ink Console also functions as an e-book reader, which supports the general ebook format that allows users to read a wide range of digital books. Moreover, it will launch on Crowd Supply for a crowdfunding campaign starting on 1 March. After the campaign, Singular 9 will specify the shipment date.
