Combat in Ninja Gaiden 4 is very different from the past games. Unlike the previous games, where combos were more important than counterattacks, Ninja Gaiden 4 has a greater emphasis on parries. While the game does feature combos, which come in handy against bosses, for most encounters, especially enemy gauntlets, parries are your best friend.

As such, you would want to master parries and counterattacks as soon as possible. Thankfully, Ninja Gaiden 4 has a rather generous parry timing, at least on Normal and Hard presets. Here’s everything you need to know about parries and counterattacks in Ninja Gaiden 4, and how to perform them.

Parries and counterattacks go hand-in-hand in Ninja Gaiden 4. Once you parry an enemy, you will stagger them for a brief moment, and during this time, you can easily retaliate with a counterattack, be it using Bloodbind Ninjutsu or regular combos. That said, there are two different ways to parry enemy attacks, i.e., by blocking at the right time or by dodging.

Here’s how you can parry enemy attacks in Ninja Gaiden 4:

Blocking

  • With your weapon drawn, press R2 or RT as soon as you see an enemy attack land on Yakumo.
  • If you time it right, you will get a distinct audio cue for a successful parry.
  • After a parry, you can retaliate with either a charged heavy attack or an active Bloodbind Ninjutsu.

Dodging

  • If you see an enemy starting an unblockable attack, you can dodge to parry it.
  • Press Circle or B on your controller and move the left stick away from the enemy at the same time. Perform this maneuver right before an enemy’s attack lands on Yakumo, to parry it.
  • You will see a blue flash if you time your dodge perfectly.
  • Initiate a counterattack with light attack combos or Bloodbind Ninjutsu to capitalize on the parry.

Unblockable Attacks

Certain enemies (elites) will perform an unblockable and undodgable attack, which has a longer animation (look for a yellow flash), but deals a ton of damage. You cannot parry these attacks. Instead, you need to use Bloodbind Ninjutsu to stagger the enemy out of the animation.

It should be noted that while an enemy is charging this attack, your light or heavy combos won’t stagger them.
