In Palia, the friendships you form with villagers are more than just casual connections. These relationships open up access to new quests, meaningful dialogue, and even romance. If you want to understand how to nurture these connections efficiently, it’s worth learning the game’s friendship mechanics with care and intention.

How To Level Up Friendship in Palia

There are two consistent methods to build friendships: regular conversations and thoughtful gift-giving.

You can speak with each villager once per in-game day to raise friendship. Since an in-game day equals one real-world hour, you have several chances each real-world day to check in. It doesn’t matter how long you talk; the interaction adds value.

Gifting plays a bigger role. Each character can receive one gift from you daily. The clock resets at 4 AM UTC, which means you can repeat this activity every day if you plan right. Items fall into two main categories: Liked and Loved. Loved gifts increase friendship points twice as much, so it’s a good idea to offer these whenever possible.

Beyond general preferences, each character has four Weekly Wants. You can discover these through dialogue or by checking their character menu, assuming you have reached the right friendship level. These rotate every Sunday and count toward the daily gift limit.

If you are focusing on growing bonds efficiently, consider using the week strategically: give two Loved Weekly Wants first, two Liked Weekly Wants, and then fill the remaining three days with Liked everyday items.

One exception is Einar. He accepts Shiny Stones each day. Doing so will contribute to his friendship level, though this counts as a single gift for that day. If you are working on the “Pebbled Plunder” accomplishment, these stones come in handy.

Tracking your progress is straightforward. Open the menu and navigate to the fifth tab, marked with a heart icon. This will show how close you are to each character.

For romanceable characters, there’s an additional bar beneath the main friendship meter. You can start romantic connections after reaching friendship level 3. Nine villagers are available for romance, and there’s no restriction on how many you pursue or which gender combinations you choose.

During the Open Beta, friendship levels cap at level 4. Even if you have hit the maximum, continued gift-giving helps with certain in-game accomplishments related to the number and type of gifts you have given. These goals include giving 100 total gifts, 40 Liked ones, and 20 Loved ones.

Giving Gifts in Palia

Gift-giving is simple but requires planning. Each day, you are limited to one gift per character. To hand over a gift:

  1. Approach the villager and press F to talk.
  2. Select the gift box icon from the chat window.
  3. Choose the item from your inventory.

The key to growth lies in choosing gifts that match the villagers’ preferences. Weekly Wants are useful for bonus gains, but everyday Liked gifts ensure you always have something to offer. If you have already given all four Weekly Wants in a given week, use the remaining days to give these common favorites.

Some villagers appreciate resources from wild creatures like Chapaa and Sernuk. This makes hunting an effective way to gather gifts. If you prefer not to spend gold or materials on arrows, you can collect flowers, fish, and minerals instead.
