The new Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) game has certain ailments that are pretty vague in the game for most players. One of them is the Electrocute ailment.

If you are following a lightning build and want to stun enemies more often the Electrocute ailment is one of the important ailments for it. Unlike most other ailments, this one has a certain trigger that you need to understand before using it in Path of Exile 2.
Here’s how Electrocute works in Path of Exile 2.
Electrocute Explained in Path of Exile 2

The ailment of Electrocute is one of the ailments in the game similar to Ignite, Bleed, Chill, Freeze, Shock, and Poison. You won’t inflict the ailment of Electrocute on an enemy with lightning damage. That is because there are certain triggers and spells that can exclusively apply Electrocute to enemies and bosses. Spells like Electrocute Arrow and Kitoko’s Current or items like Brain Rattler or Beyond Reach help in electrocute buildup.
The way Electrocute works in Path of Exile 2 is that normal lightning damage will not inflict Electrocute on the enemy. But if the user has the Electrocute Support Gem, the lightning damage will increase electrocute buildup. This property of Electrocute is handy as you need to afflict the enemy once and continue using lightning spells to build affliction. Although, as with all ailments, the effect is mitigated by the enemy’s Elemental Ailment Threshold, and the threshold scales directly with Life. So, the more Life the enemy has, the more difficult it is to inflict Electrocute.
Electrocute stops any enemy action for 5 seconds. This means that the enemy will not be able to perform any move during the 5 seconds. Electrocute has to be applied by a skill or equipment modifier, which is different from Shock.
Shock is what is dealt when you use lightning spells. Currently, you can inflict Electrocute using a few spells and items, such as a pair of unique gloves that change all lightning to Electrocute instead of shock. Or, the gem mentioned earlier also helps lightning to deal with Electrocute buildup.
You Can Afflict Electrocute Through Other Sources
Additionally, you can also inflict Electrocute with chaos damage using the Beyond Reach quiver, or the Brain Rattler unique mace will also help you inflict Electrocute with any type of damage. However, similar to its theme, you can normally inflict Electrocute with lightning, but the game doesn’t tell you that there are items that override it.
