The Nociosphere in Rimworld is one of the most mysterious and powerful entities to appear. Added in the Anomaly DLC, this 200 kg bioferrite ball seems completely harmless at first. However, you’d be wrong to assume so. Its initial dormant state doesn’t last too long, and when it finally awakens, it can cause quite a bit of havoc. If you aren’t prepared, this otherworldly ball will inflict unimaginable pain on your colonists, killing them off.

However, there are specific ways of preventing such a thing from happening. In the following guide, we’ll explore some of the tips and tricks that you can employ to subdue the Nociosphere or use it for your own gains.

When Does the Nociosphere in Rimworld Appear?

The Nociosphere will appear on your map at random, mostly in areas where traders gather together. At this point, the spherical ball will be completely docile, and you can capture it easily. It won’t try to escape or hurt its captors. However, you will require a warden colonist to suppress it at first. When it first appears in your game, the Nociosphere will emit a sound. This is a sign of its arrival, and you should pay close heed to it.

In its dormant state, the Nociosphere seems to have no function. You can suppress it and keep it that way for a while. However, soon, suppression won’t have any effect on the entity. You will receive a warning notification that the ball is slowly becoming unstable. From the time of this mail, you will have 10 in-game days until the Nociosphere reaches 100% instability.

When that happens, the ball’s red accents will become more prominent, almost glowing. And, more importantly, it will turn hostile and attack all of your colonists and anyone else that comes close. The Nociosphere can inflict Pain on any human or animal that is located within a six-tile radius from it. All pawns will experience this effect, regardless of what armor or protection they have. Only a pawn who’s psychically deaf is immune to the pain effect.

Dealing With the Nociosphere in Rimworld

You can study the Nociosphere in its docile state to figure out that you can deploy it against enemy clusters. This is key in understanding how to deal with it. Since the Nociosphere has an immense health pool, we recommend you don’t take it head-on. Doing so will only sacrifice your colonists, without any beneficial results. Instead, you can follow some of the pointers below.

  • You can send the Nociosphere out to enemy locations. The entity doesn’t really care who it inflicts pain on, so you can use it to weaken or outright take down enemies without putting yourself in harm’s way.

  • While it’s in the dormant state, you should farm bioferrite from it. Doing so doesn’t make it more unstable.

  • If you’re planning on sending the Nociosphere to fight against enemies, make sure the enemy group is far away from your site. This ensures that the ball doesn’t get distracted and return to attack your colonists.

  • Also, you should send it over to fight against mechanoids, who are mostly resistant to the Nociosphere’s fire-based attacks. If the mechanoid group is particularly large or has enough heavy enemies, such as Centipedes, the battle might end with the Nociosphere being destroyed.

  • Alternatively, you can build a 1×1 cell enclosed by a mountain and deploy the ball there. However, we suggest using it against your enemies to weaken them.
