Prosthetics in Rimworld are artificial body parts that you can unlock through research. You use these as a replacement for a missing or damaged body part. They are not as effective as having organic arms. However, they have a few perks that compensate for their lack of efficiency.

However, you need to consider whether you really need to attach prosthetics in Rimworld. Depending on the situation, these can be beneficial or detrimental. With that said, let’s discuss the pros and cons of prosthetics in Rimworld and decide if they’re worth it.

Pros of Having Prosthetics in Rimworld

Good Temporary Limb Substitutes

Typically, your pawns are better off having a prosthetic in Rimworld than not having one at all. They are better alternatives than having wooden or peg replacements. These artificial parts can restore at least 50% efficiency for that missing body part. It’s a good temporary alternative until you can unlock bionic research.

Better Combat and Work Effectiveness

Unlike organic parts, prosthetics take damage as a whole instead of being separated by subparts. Additionally, it’s immune to infections or scars. On top of that, the artificial parts also don’t feel pain or bleed. It’s a small advantage that prosthetics have. This can increase combat effectiveness, as pawns can work longer without succumbing to pain shock.

Mood Enhancer

Some pawns may enjoy having a prosthetic. This can improve their mood, which can help them be more productive.

Bad Self-Control

In relation to not feeling pain, there is a risk for pawns to die in combat or at work before they are brought down to pain shock. This means you might need to monitor them and make sure they don’t overwork themselves.

Less Efficient Than Organic Organs

While having prosthetics is better than having no limbs, they are still less efficient than organic parts. You basically lose 50% of your limb effectiveness once you replace your organic body parts with artificial ones.

Some Don’t Like Having Prosthetics

Another thing to consider is the risks of implanting a prosthetic to a pawn. Some colonists don’t like having artificial limbs, which reduces their mood. Complications can also happen during surgery.

More Vulnerable Than Organic Limbs

Prosthetics can also be destroyed easily. Unlike organic parts that absorb damage across subparts, artificial limbs take hits as a whole and will break if they receive too much damage. This means they are the most vulnerable parts of the body.

Expensive Investment

Investing in prosthetics can also be expensive and requires a lot of manpower. If you can, wait until you unlock bionics. This upgrade offers superior performance in the long term instead of just being a substitute for missing body parts.
