The controversy surrounding Rockstar Games and the popular GTA 5 RP server mod FiveM has been reignited. New reports regarding what’s happening behind the scenes have surfaced. The reports made a plethora of allegations, explaining how behind the scenes, the FiveM development process is filled with “embezzlement, fraud, corporate espionage, leaks, favoritism, corruption, blackmail, harassment, conflicts of interest, lies, stolen valor, bribes, slander, manipulation, and sabotage.”

Additionally, the report also alleges that the FiveM mod is only being maintained until the release of Project ROME, a new multiplayer mod that is said to replace FiveM in the future. This article will dive into the allegations and the controversy between Rockstar Games and FiveM.

The Relationship Between FiveM and Rockstar Games

The history between FiveM’s developers and Rockstar Games has been complicated. Initially, Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind Rockstar Games, took legal action against the mod back in 2015. This led to its lead developer, NTAuthority (NTA), being banned from creating mods for any of the publisher’s IPs. According to the publisher, FiveM enabled unauthorized modifications and could facilitate cheating or piracy. Despite this, the multiplayer mod continues development. The modding team claimed it operated independently of Rockstar’s servers and did not enable piracy.

Over time, the relationship between the two parties evolved. In 2023, Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM mod, founded by NTA. This means the multiplayer mod is officially under its umbrella. This acquisition was seen as an effort to bring FiveM’s modding community under Rockstar’s control while ensuring compliance with its terms of service. While this move legitimized the multiplayer mods’ existence, it also raised concerns among players and developers about how much creative freedom the platform would retain under Rockstar’s oversight.

Issues Surrounding FiveM

There is no question that FiveM has become one of the most popular mods for GTA 5. The mod paves the way for people to create their own servers and share the experience with hundreds of other players.

However, its journey was marked by legal battles and alleged mismanagement behind the scenes. This information was shared through a lengthy document outlining these allegations.

Here is a quick rundown of the key details:

Allegations of Mismanagement

The report alleges that before the Rockstar acquisition, a group referred to as “Groot Gang” had already been making moves to gain control of the FiveM project. Following Rockstar Games’ acquisition of the RP server mod, the group allegedly used its connections to secure senior positions within the said project. Reportedly, this was made possible with the help of a Rockstar employee named Ethan Hirsch.

This group would allegedly do little to no work on the project but brag about how they are “visionaries of FiveM.” They would also reportedly make up issues to try and kick NTA out of the team. The project eventually fell into disarray, and the community was left dissatisfied with the state of FiveM.

Security and Source Code Leaks

Another major controversy between Rockstar Games and FiveM revolves around the alleged leak of GTA 5’s source code back in December 2023. It was initially thought to be the work of hackers. However, the report alleges that the leaks were done by a Rockstar employee.

According to the report, the source of the leaks was the former team of alt:V, which was acquired by Rockstar Games to help with the FiveM project. The alt:V team was allegedly given early access to the next GTA 5 build. They would allegedly go on to share the source code outside of Rockstar Games. This resulted in the GTA 5 source code leak back in December 2023.

FiveM Under Maintenance Mode While Waiting for Project ROME

Another detail in the Rockstar Games and FiveM controversy document speculates that Project ROME will soon replace FiveM. According to the report, the team allegedly pitched ideas on how to integrate the RP server mod into the GTA source code. This would make it easier to maintain and expand upon with new features. However, their ideas were allegedly declined.

Looking further, the report states that a separate project named ROME is in development, claiming it to be superior to FiveM. This sparks speculation that FiveM is now in maintenance mode and will be retired once Project ROME is ready for deployment.

Keep in mind that these allegations are also unverified. Despite this, it has sparked debates within the FiveM community about transparency and accountability. Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games have yet to publicly address all of these concerns in detail. Take this information with a grain of salt.
